Frimsi. I have humbly accepted to lead this esteemed Merchant's Guild. With the help of my fellow merchants of Bree-land, I intend to make Bree fabulously rich. If you had not already heard of my curious but no less remarkable product, I sell discount gems. An affordable alternative to traditional jewelry, as I like to call it. Some may question their authenticity, and rightly so. But regardless of such concerns, I assure you that you will not find such quality at such a low price anywhere else. But the Merchant's Guild is not just about me and my product, it is about all merchants that operate in Bree-land. So I shall briefly recount the other merchants I have had the immense honour of working with in the Merchant's Guild.
Frodefast, also known as the Mercenary Baker. He is a generous baker that against all odds offers all of his baked goods for free. I don't know how he manages to finance this operation, but he has found a way that works for him. But he is often too generous! Especially when he decides to feed brigands.
Geoadoc. He sells the best pipeweed in all of Middle-Earth! But the only thing greater than the quality of his pipeweed is the quality of his punctuality. We can be hosting a market in the middle of Mirkwood and he will somehow find a way to be there before any elven guard notices him, ready to provide his customers with their desperately needed pipeweed at affordable prices.
Meldanyel, also known as the Dalish Daughter. She is an excellent cook of an even more excellent character. She can perhaps teach even the esteemed Elrond a thing or two about proper hospitality. The only problem is that she trusts friends too much and strangers too little, if such a thing were possible. At any rate, if she wishes to become rich she will have to learn to be open to new things. And I am sure she will!
Kennet. He is first and foremost a scholar, and then a merchant. And even then I am not sure exactly what it is he sells. But as the saying goes knowledge is power. And if people believe this to be true, knowledge can be sold at a good price! And Kennet has plenty of knowledge in stock, and the skill needed to acquire much more. So I am sure he will do very well. As long as he occasionally remembers to put down the book!
Hildiroc, also known as the proprietor of Hareswood's Finest Instruments. He is a well respected hobbit of unmatched cunning and grace. He offers an excellent product: instruments of the finest quality. And by Durin does he know how to sell a product, if his behaviour and presentation at our Council Meetings are of any indication. So I am confident he is going to become very rich, if he isn't already!
Arlane. She is a crafty merchant who knows how to get things done and is willing to get her hands dirty in order to do it. She can provide any luxury item your imagination can conjure, as long as you are willing to pay a fair price for it of course. And aside from all that she is such pleasant company; one would almost forget the horrors she has had to endure in order to safely deliver the product to the customer at the desired costs. A sure sign of any successful merchant, to be sure!
Atisa. This ambitious Dwarf sells the most expensive commodity in all of Middle-Earth: love. She is a match-maker and she is quite skilled at what she does, if you believe her claims. I know I do! I am sure she will make countless people very happy as she expands her practice into Bree-land, and become very rich in the process. A totally fair arrangement if you ask me.
Fennal. She is a clever and resourceful hobbit, willing to defend her interests with fierce determination. She works with this mysterious organization known as the House of Mink. I believe this company deals in furs, but regardless of what it actually is that this company sells it has graced Fennal with trade connections throughout all of Middle-Earth. Fennal is also a founding member of the Commoner's Committee, and I cannot thank her enough for her work there. The Merchant's Guild has grown considerably since the formation of the Commoner's Committee. And she hasn't asked for a single copper coin in payment for her services since! Needless to say I hope Fennal keeps up the good work! All of Bree will be richer as a result of her efforts.
Britomartis. She is a delightfully eccentric hobbit. I suspect that she is the worst tailor in all of Middle-Earth, but by my beard that won't stop her tailoring efforts! She is stubborn and committed to her craft, no matter how terrible she is at it. Any Dwarf worth his beard can respect that! This proud and ferocious hobbit is a force to be reckoned with, as a member of the Commoner's Committee she it set to bring a lot of changes to Bree, whether the people of Bree want these changes or not! Durin knows she thinks she has a lot of wisdom to share with just about anyone who has the immense pleasure of coming across her path. I am sure she will be rich in no time, just not by her tailoring trade!
Emsy. She is a native Bree-lander who is especially endowed with a certain worldly wisdom. A worldly wisdom that our Merchant's Guild is in desperate need of! Her cautious and astute observations have kept the wild ambitions of our guild in check, and I am sure she has saved us from making more totally embarrassing decisions more times than I would like to admit! As for what she does for a trade, I've been told that she works at her father's bakery and at a nursery as well. She is as diligent and hardworking as any Dwarf! I am truly honored and grateful to have her in our guild; I suspect no one else in Bree would take us seriously without her sage contributions.
Khrysayor. He is a Dwarf craftsman of the Broadbeam Clan. And by Durin does he live up to his clan's prestigious reputation: he makes the best brass goods in all of Eriador, or perhaps even in all of Middle-Earth! And his skill in craft is also matched by his great wisdom and common sense. So he is quite the boon to our council meetings, as he represents the only sane Dwarf in our guild. Our guild is in desperate need of a proper Dwarf to properly represent Dwarven interests. And Durin knows I certainly can't represent a proper Dwarf even if I wanted to! So I thank Durin that Khrysayor has decided to join our guild, so that everyone in our guild, including myself, can be reminded what a true Dwarf looks like.
Background
The town of Bree represents the future of Middle-Earth! I’ve visited countless markets across the vast stretch of Middle-Earth and never before have I seen such economic potential concentrated in one single location. But the bustling activity that warrants this said potential is unorganized and chaotic. If the town of Bree is to realize its true potential as the next great marketplace of Middle-Earth, this chaotic energy must be more properly organized. Therefore having been granted a generous charter from ever gracious and wise Mayor Graeme Tenderlarch, I hereby establish the Merchant’s Guild of Bree! Utilizing the state of the art methods I’ve come to know from the markets of Dale and Lake-town, I will make sure Bree becomes the richest city of men in all of Middle-Earth! Every resident shall become richer as the tide of growth rises, and the ancient markets of Rhovanion will gawk in envy as they are quickly surpassed by Bree in rapid economic development. The Merchant’s Guild shall essentially be an advisory council to the mayor so that the mayor may more actively engage with the market community and measure the concerns and plights of Bree’s businesses when implementing his trade policies. So if you are a merchant or business owner that regularly works in Bree and its surrounding areas, please join the Merchant’s Guild! The entrance fee is only 50 silver coins. Consider this meager sum an investment into the future wealth and splendour of Bree!
Yours Truly,
Frimsi Gembeard, Master Merchant
