Merchant's Guild Monthly Council Meeting Notes
((June 27th))
Those attending this meeting were: Frimsi Gembeard (Chair), Vratni Copperhand, Lane, Geoadoc, Samfer, Rilenna (guest?), Ceryle (prospective member).
- There was some general business firstly, which saw the introduction of first-time attendees Ceryle and Rilenna.
- Some congratiulations and support were offered to Samfer ahead of the grand opening of his new Post House this coming this Monday, ((June 29, 2026 9:00 PM ST)). Attendees also discussed the opportunities the new postal service would bring.
- The meeting formally opened after some delay, with thanks to an ever fastidious hobbit's reminders! Speaking on recent decisions by our beloved Mayor, Frimsi brought news that the guild's approved petition for the 'Staddle Defence Petition' had been vetoed by the Mayor due to 'limited constabulary resources' or some other such nonsense. <some scribbles are written next in the margin of the minutes which make a few uncouth remarks about the Mayor>. This prompted some discussion on whether the Guild ought to independently fund security for trade routes, and vulnerable settlements through the use of hired mercenaries, rather than relying upon Bree-town authorities. Some even went as far as to say that Bree's position as the premier town in the region may suffer as a result of it turning its back like so upon the requests of the smaller villages. <The scribbles continue...'But surely the Mayor took that into account... not likely!'>
- With that news out of the way, the Guild moved ahead in discussion of Vratni's very well meaning and highly profitable petition for the 'Steady-Pace Mandate'; and endeavour to protect Bree's streets from galloping nutcases racing about without a care in the world! Unfortunately, concerns were raised about how heavy-handed this good measure might be, and despite some aspects of support, the measure was ultimately voted down, 2 Ayes to 3 nays. Vratni accepted that significant refinement would be required, and also thanks those who had suggested many great ideas which in parallel could each be good coin-making ideas.
- A petition looking at 'Farmland Expansion' by an absent Frodefast was to be heard, but as Frodefast himself was absent, presumed stewed by goblins, that matter was tabled for now. A commentator pointed out that Frodefast was known to have a thick hide, and as such, if they were being stewed, there would still be ample time to consider a rescue of them... subject to costs, the weather and if the Prancing Pony was hosting any interesting events that might be worth participating in beforehand.
- Things moved on to another interesting proposal after this, which came to Frimsi himself via one Enid Nettlesting in the Wildwood of all places. Yes! The League of the Axe had proposed a deal to the Guild which resulted in a most contentious debate on the actions of the League principally, as concerns their felling activities in the Wildwood, and whether the Guild might seek to remove certain 'protections' in order to increase the profitability of being a middle-man in selling the League's wood (by getting our hands on more of it). While members broadly supported this opportunity, concerns were expressed over concerns of something called "environmental sustainability" <some notes are again scribbled in the margins pondering whether this was some type of Elvish expression>. While the petition did pass 3 Ayes to 2 Nays, the Aye votes were not without strings attached - for several amendments were mentioned or at least sought for that support. Frimsi agreed to negotiate with the League of the Axe while incorporating the environmental concerns raised during the discussion.
- New attendee Ceryle expressed interest to formally join the Guild, and while there was support from Lane here (specifically in paying their fees), there were some raised eyebrows given their young age. Frimsi welcomes the idea however.
- The meeting closed after a lengthy but productive debate on many topics, with members agreeing that profitable trade, public safety and "sustainability" are things worthy of our collective time. Despite disagreements, all petitions generated useful amendments or ideas and we shall see what might unfold because of them in the weeks ahead.
These notes were prepared by an overworked and underpaid notary of the Guild's official proceedings.
