A December Night

with extreme apologies to W.S. Gilbert

When a hobbit’s not engaged in digging taters (digging taters)

Nor is elbow-deep in scrubbing pots and pans (pots and pans)

The pages are spotted here and there with tears, and the handwriting shakes in places.

Dear Ma, Pa, and dearest brother (who I hope knows I love 'im even as much as I teases 'im),

I am so sorry, Ma. I barely don't even know how to start. Oh Pa, you and him had been pals for so long. I am so sorry to have to write this.

Your friend, and my master, Nadvald of the Lonely Mountain, who escaped the dragon, is dead.

Melondene (née Boffin) Birdsfoot, wife of Rubicund Birdsfoot, master jeweller, and mother of Franco, a Bounder, and Corydalia, current apprentice to Nadvald of the Lonely Mountain. This is a brief sketch intended to capture Melondene in a moment of contentment as she presents some irises, pinks, and forget-me-nots in a vase. She is a bit plump in her maternal years, and has noticeable streaks of white in her ginger hair, with lines from smiling and a bit of matronly loose skin.

The outside bears the stamp of the Quick Post on it, as well as a cirth rune in the corner. The paper is thin but tough, watermarked with cirth that a Dwarf could tell you mean "Nadvald's Wonders," with a design like the Lonely Mountain between the two words.
