  Blōdflæd's scars

Blodflaed's most noticable feature would be her dark forest green eyes, which glint with an unspoken sadness, but also grim determination. The sadness and determination surely must have come from the events that caused the now large old scars to appear on her face, never able to fully heal and fade away. She has shoulder length blonde hair, which is naturally straight and quite thick. She'd wear chainmaille, with green leather armour covering it or a green tunic of Rohirric style. She'd carry a shield on her back, with a sword and a seax (a dagger-like weapon, used mainly as a hunting tool) on her belt. She'd sometimes be seen with a bow with a quiver full of arrows. She also wears a black ring, with red crossed swords and two lines on it, on the middle finger of her right hand, showing that she is the second in command of The Black Steel.

The ring of the Second in Command, which Blōdflæd wears.

Background

Many women in the Maerc know how to fight, some even took it as far to become a shieldmaiden. Blōdflæd as a child always looked up to them. Running around playing 'eorlingas ond þéofmenn' as a child, she tended to be the one who hit her friends too hard and had to go apologise.  At the ago of ten, a retired old man in the town of Stoke offered Blodflaed basic lessons in combat, for he used to be in the eored of Stoke and thought her enthusiasm to become a shieldmaiden, even at that age, was strong. She trained herself hard, or as hard as a ten year old could, but as she grew older, she took her training more seriously and at the age of fourteen, she started training with Stoke's eored itself, although unofficially. At the age of sixteen, she left the Maerc, exploring the lands to the West, although at this point, only Bema knows why she chose to do that.

After arriving in Bree-land and joining up with The Black Steel, she pledged to become Fiontann’s shieldmaiden, becoming what she’d looked up to. It became clear within the company that she was rather good at combat, defeating a good few of the other members of the company, as well as outsiders too, in friendly spars. Because of this, she became known as the Champion of the Black Steel, although Arthasdir seemed ashamed that his titled was taken by a teenager. After spending much time with The Black Steel, her friend Lieta became leader and the two planned to take the company to wander south, in the direction of Blodflaed's homeland, but with the objective to explore.

There was much pain and suffering on their journey going through Eregion, Enedwaith and Dunland. It was in Dunland, that she was taken captive by the wildmen and the vicious Pren. It was he who fought her in the Culling Pit - she fought as hard as she could, but in the end, he won, and he ruined her, for he was the one who made the scars all over her chest and face. She only survived as she was able to get to Grimbold's camp, where she was healed up, her upper torso and face mangled with scars. The company rejoined her, as they got separated, and then headed into the West-Mark.

Blōdflæd became Maegisterwigend of the Black Steel during that time. She helped Lieta lead the company in that time. However, after Athlenah's betrayal and attack on the company, in which Lieta herself got shot in the chest, her fate now uncertain, Blōdflæd gave up her position, to watch over Lieta, giving leadership of the remaining company to Phaewyn - however the company fell apart, those who remained going on their own paths.

Lieta died and Blōdflæd buried her in a graveyard in Forlaw. Blōdflæd  moved on, travelling the paths to her home once more, remembering the past that had made her and pushing herself onwards to a future that she had always dreamed of. She want back home, saw her old friends and her family. She also disposed of one of the rings that The Black Steel were trying to solve the mystery of before they disbanded - in a few years she would come to find out that they had been cursed. After staying at home for a while, Blōdflæd became restless and decided to move on to her goal once again. Eventually, she made it to Helm's Deep.

Life there was different to what she was used to, but she quickly grew to like it. She liked being a soldier, training, listening to orders. However, she didn't patrol, because of the rule of King Theoden - though from her time in Edoras, she suspected that something was wrong in the Meduseld. She made many new friends, who became close to her and life settled down into a good routine.

Then, news from Edoras. Blōdflæd did not get to hear the details, but Theoden King had ordered the people to come to Helm's Deep, to defend themselves against an army of orcs and Dunlendings. People did indeed come, including her family and friends. Her brother and friend Aethrand were called to fight as they were able and so the two joined Blōdflæd and her fellow soldiers on the wall when the time came to fight.

The battle was tough and draining. Many died, Blōdflæd's childhood friend Aethrand included, who got blown apart when part of the Deeping Wall exploded. Blōdflæd was in shock, but survival instincts kicked in and she kept on fighting so that in the end she survived the battle with her brother and around half of her patrol group.

Blōdflæd thought that things were over, that they'd rebuild Helm's Deep and go back to normal. But within a month, summons were made - all able bodied soldiers were to ride to Dunharrow - Gondor had called for aid and so she would be riding into a great battle against the forces of the enemy.

The ride was long and each coming day filled Blōdflæd's heart with dread. But she was a shieldmaiden and she was brave - she wouldn't flee. Soon they were in the lands of Gondor and she saw devastation that rivaled what she had seen in the Maerc. And then, they stood on the Pelennor. So much darkness and evil before her. The White City was in bad shape, smoke rising from within the walls, destruction all over.

Theoden King gave a speech, filling Blōdflæd with inspiration, and no doubt the soldiers around her. With a battle cry in unison, the forces of the Eorlingas entered the battle. All went well to begin with - Blōdflæd cut down many of the enemy forces from atop her horse. But, in the midst of the battle, Blōdflæd got knocked from her horse. She fought alone for some time, before coming across another lone solider - one from Gondor. They banded together and fought their way through, finding a group of Eorlingas on foot and joined them. Time did not matter here, but eventually the soldiers around her fell, except for the Gondorian. However, they got separated by the flow of the battle and Blōdflæd was alone once more. She was getting tired, but she had to keep fighting. She killed one orc, then another and another. Then one came up from behind and caught her off guard, stabbing her in the back, luckily it's blade not getting past her ribs. She didn't let it do more damage to her and killed it. She kept fighting, but the world started to get distorted. The blade the orc stabbed her with had been poisoned! Realizing this, Blōdflæd fought her way towards the gates, so that perhaps she'd have a chance at survival. She managed to get to the gates, but collapsed in front of some of the soldiers defending it.

She woke up in what was called the Houses of Healing and was cared for the the healers of Minas Tirith. Once she was well enough, she was escorted to the 2nd tier of the city and given passwords for the first two tiers. She stayed in Minas Tirith and recovered, finding her friends who had survived the battle. However, some of her friends that were well enough to fight, were called to march to the Black Gate with King Eomer alongside the new king of Gondor. Blōdflæd stayed in the city and waited for her friends to return. None of them came back.

Soon after, Blōdflæd decided to return back to Helm's Deep. But something had changed in her. Everything was peaceful and Blōdflæd didn't feel needed anymore - she was a shieldmaiden and now things weren't so desperate, she wasn't sent out to fight as often, as shieldmaidens are seen as good luck, so they are kept back from fighting. So, she decided to journey back to Bree-land, so see if any of The Black Steel remained.

They did. Fiontann, who she'd last seen gravely injured, was alive and running an inn called the Thirsty Boar. But that meant that he had to deliver the news of Lieta. It made her return difficult.

Soon after, with Blōdflæd back to being the second in command, the company started a journey to the Misty Mountains, with a group of dwarves that needed help to seal a goblin tunnel that had opened up and was giving them problems. Along the way, they faced many perils but managed to defeat them! Blōdflæd however, got badly injured and captured by a strange goblin. She was imprisoned in the depths of the goblin tunnels but a friendly goblin called Uchsah offered to free her if she gave him shiny things. As it was her only chance to get free, Blōdflæd took to offer and surprisingly, Uchsah helped her escape, even risking his life for her, complicating Blōdflæd's morality. Soon after, as they were travelling to close the tunnel, the encountered an army of goblins, barely escaping it in time. However, the fort they'd hidden in became besieged and The Black Steel fought with the Dwarves to defeat the army. After the battle, Blōdflæd and the others moved on to seal the tunnel, climbing up the mountainside and using explosive barrels that dwarves had left for them to collapse it.

The Black Steel returned home and after sometime resting, trouble occurred with an evil being named Domruth. Blōdflæd stayed behind for most of those goings on, in case something bad happened to Fiontann and she needed to be safe to keep the company together. During that time, she planned a tournament, which was held at the start of the summer that year. Several weeks after the tournament was held, Blōdflæd held a meeting to decide a route to Gondor, as she had been planning to lead The Black Steel there for a while. Once again, it was a long and arduous journey, but eventually, everyone made it home alive and well, this time.
