“All kinds of people come into a bakery, Owena. You need to be kind and a hostess to all of them.” Mrs. Baker was glaring at her daughter. The girl of about twelves was looking at her shoes.
“But he was mean to me in front of Annii ! I don’t want him to come back!”
“No, no do not make this about his behavior young lady! You can only control your own. And frankly I can’t believe you did that! I thought I raised you better than this! His Mother was over here and… I am so embarrassed by your behavior.”
A tear slid down Owena’s cheek, “I’m sorry Ma.” She whispered.
“You put FROGS in their order of Carrot Puffs! Frogs! You could endangered our entire business with a stunt like that! Luckily Hueber’s Mother is a kind and good woman otherwise… I don’t even want to know what could have happened! You will not be allowed any of your books until Yule and you will have to clean all the dishes every day and… I’m telling your Pa not to play his harp… and I may add more … I’m so mad I need to take a step outside. You just sit there until I can keep my voice down.”
Owena was looking at her shoes and sobbing saying, “Sorry Ma.” Over and over in a soft voice until the door slammed.
Owena was surprised that the Radcliff family still ordered from her. At age sixteen she had been surprised Hueber had said that he loved her too. Owena liked surprises. The plan was to add extra to this order because she heard his Father was ill. And no matter their history, she felt bad for him.

Chop two bushels of carrots and boil them in water. Once they are soft, mash them until there are no chunks. You will need about a pint of the carrot pulp. Take a penny loaf, slightly older is better, and make it into breadcrumbs by crumbling it until it is fine. Stale biscuit would work too. Mix that into the carrot pulp. Use some eggs but for whites. Add a little cream and a little sack wine. Add three pinches of nutmeg and then stir. It is optional to add honey for taste. In a large pot heat oil. Once hot, dollop the batter into the oil and watch until they are brown and crispy. Remove and let cool.
