The Journey Home I: Lone-lands and Trollshaws

*a letter sent to Irwinn bearing the seal of the Esquires of the Riddermark*

Hál faeder.
We have now finally left Bree.  While gathering in front of the prancing pony I noticed faces that were quite unfamiliar, along with faces that I had not seen in a longer time. Yogunheim was one of the later mentioned. Last time I heard of him he was chased by people who wanted to harm him. It seemed that this didn’t kill him though and he seemed eager to return to Rohan.

His companions however were quite unfamiliar to me, only giving me their names as there was little time for proper introductions. Yogunheim gave me his word that he would vouch for these unknown people. Having known Yogunheim for quite a while, I felt it right to accept this. Dagden was rather quick to point out his distrust towards these newcomers. However, with this we set off towards the south gate.

Our numbers were quite grand as we left Bree and the journey through Breeland and Lone-lands went swiftly. Making a hold at the western side of the last bridge I ordered the scouts of the company to work together and find a suitable place to make camp at the eastern side of the bridge. It did not take long before Dagden came back and whined about how the others were telling him orders when they were nothing but strangers to him. Already at this point I understood that this journey would probably not go as swift as I would have hoped.

After having calmed Dagden the two other, Yogunheim and Hardoleth, returned claiming that Dagden was acting immature, a feature I sensed myself after having spoken to him.  Nevertheless they had found a spot to camp at but Dagden made sure to imply this was not a suitable spot, which made the rest of the company question why we didn’t take opportunity to camp at Ost Guruth when we had the chance. My patience was hanging by a thread at this point and I had no interest in turning back the way we had come from. We proceeded over the bridge to the site Yogunheim and Hardoleth had found. Ost Dúrgonn it was called.

Upon arrival we noticed small neekers infesting the campsite amongst the ruins. Being less harmful than other creatures in the area, they were still a nuisance for someone who wanted a good nights sleep. Once the people had gathered and been given various tasks for the evening, Dagden approached me and wanted a word. He wished to see that Yogunheim went back to Bree or he would do so himself. The view I have on people who demand ultimatums of me is well known to you faeder, and you will truly not be surprised for the decision I made, which was to ignore Dagdens request.

He reacted as I was afraid he would react, making a scene and storming off on his horse. Yogunheim having noticed this became so disheartened himself that he chose to return to Bree himself taking one of the people he vouched for with him. Not even one day has passed, and I was abandoned by 3 people of the company.

Moments after this Dagden returned, although with an arrow sticking out from his back. It turns out that he was poisoned by an arrow of a goblin. He quickly collapsed after this. Eadenswith and I tried to tend to his wound to the best of our abilities, but he went into a state of shock and has acquired a rather abyssal fever now during the night. If he is not given further healing, he will be the first who dies under my leadership.

I hope that the responsibilities I’ve put on your shoulders are going better than the ones I’ve put on my own.  I hope to hear from you soon.

Ferthu hál, Faeder.
