Part One

And there the ancient hobbit sits
With many gathered round
Much silence in the Inn that night
There hardly was a sound
And then the Gaffer thumps his mug
His eyes looked sharp and mean
"I'll tell ye all about the Inn,
And why the Dragon's green!"

"So long ago, I was a lad"
Was how his tale began
"I worked the pits in Scary town
It toughened up these hands

Journal entry 206. A delivery to Hobbiton, the Shire.

As I sat on a dry stone wall overlooking the Greenfields I took stock of the situation. My quarry had already departed and I was at best a half day behind him. He had been heading north that much was clear. I decided that he must have taken the road, a hobbit not used to these parts would be foolish to strike out across country – there were many hazards, not least the warren of old badger tunnels, but also more recent threats. The threat of goblins.

I am pleased to inform you that my investigations into the current location of the Sandhill family have gone well. After asking several locals I was given an address on the north-west corner of the village. However upon calling on the residence it would appear that the only member of the Sandhill family living there was an elderly Hobbit whose maiden name had been Sandhill.
