Chapter VIII - A new investigation and off to the North Farthing

Investigations into the Mathom Hunters had not been going well for Gormbard, they had become increasingly cautious in their activities and his investigations had hit a dead end. In the mean time Master Foxtail had spent many evenings locked in is study with the book that Gormbard had retrieved from the Thains Library. But it looked like his perseverance would be rewarded as one evening Gormbard was called to the study. Master Foxtail had been cross-referencing a family in Brockenborings with families that were present at The Battle of the Greenfields. Master Foxtail had found a good number of old archived papers over the years with many accounts of the Battle. Some of them appeared to be mere tales but a good number of them apparently mentioned one Hobbit in particular that stood alongside Bullroarer during the battle. It was this Hobbit that had received a very special Mathom for his efforts. Nothing was written of the Mathom itself but family name was recorded and with the various books on family history Master Foxtail had managed to trace the family who still lived in the village of Brokenborings.

Master Foxtail was certain that he was well on the way to discovering the Mathom that would take pride of place in the Mathom House and would attract folk from across the Shire to see his display dedicated to the Battle of the Greenfields. Gormbard was given an envelope which he was instructed not to open until he reached the North Farthing, Master Foxtail was certain that the Mathom Hunters would be watching and he was not going to allow them to get to the Mathom first.

Master Foxtail also gave Gormbard instructions to send him regular updates in sealed envelopes via the Quickpost. As Gormbard left the study he was given a new pack full of the things he would need for the trip.

Gormbard had not been up to the North Farthing before and was eager to see what he could find there. Taking the road east out of Michel Delving towards Hobbiton Gormbard decided that he would spend the night in the Green Dragon before he continued on his journey north.
