Dwarven Stone Masons at Work
It was the Elf, Estarfin, who had asked us to build a defensive wall for him. We did not often take any orders from Elves. Neither would we have been overly willing for carrying out his request, but we knew of the Lady, whose home it was. Carnifinde of Thargelion was a name known to us, also as Danel of Eregion. She was a 'Dwarf friend' of old. And this Estarfin, also of Thargelion, had written a polite enough letter, showing he acknowledged our skills. Those skills with stone that were superior to that of Elves. He also offered a very fair price, though I would haggle a little with him for more, when he saw the finished wall.
We had to drag Throthi along. He is the Master Stone Mason, but his feet are drawn to wandering, and to finding good taverns and good company. Yet he is family, and will hearken to his elder sister.
The journey was not far, from Thorin's Halls to the edge of Lindon. The Elven homestead was but a few miles over out border, and adjacent to Yondershire.
But there was a sense of unease among the Elves. One of them nodded to us as we went to start our work this morning. Yrill is her name. She is another who speaks respectfully to us, most likely as she is from Eregion of old. She has been on guard duty. They take it in turns, these Elves. Well, not the youngest one, who stays in the house mostly, nor the one named 'Parnard'. He gives them verbal encouragement.
They are distressed because of a recent attack on this place, that resulted in three houses being wrecked, and one of their number slain. We talk about it among ourselves. Having one's home threatened is always a hard thing.
I told Yrill we had our axes with us. Not just pick axes for the digging. It may not be our concern, but should any brigands seek to attack again, they will find we honour still those who honour us. The axes of the Dwarves will be upon any enemy.
