Outward Appearance

Filegris presents a distinctly more boyish appearance than other nissi. Although not any taller than other Silvan-elves, she wears her light brown hair short -- often in a ragged, shaggy cut, as if she had been her own hairdresser. Her body is slender, wiry rather than bulky, and her drab brown and green attire frequently needs dusting off.

She is seldom without bow and a pair of sturdy knives, except on the rare occasions when she can be coaxed to attend a social gathering. Her scent is oddly pleasant -- fresh, damp earth and pine sap. Anyone standing close to her might suddenly crave a walk in the woods without really knowing why.

Her hands are callused and scarred from bowhunting and from gripping the bark of trees. She seems to take no particular care with her appearance except when prompted to replace a particularly torn cloak, although she is always pleased to have new boots.

Upon really coming to trust a person, she may withdraw a well-padded leather sack from within her tunic. This contains her most prized possession: a collection of pebbles, each small enough for a bird to fly off with, but each representing someplace she has been in her travels.

Background

Filegris ("queen of small birds") was named thus by her father, who had high hopes that she would be a great beauty and make someone a splendid bride. However, from a very early age, she preferred to play in the mud than dress up in her Ama's gowns. Meanwhile, her slightly older brother was the indoorsy, bookish child, leading Filegris's Ada to declare in a fit of frustration that she should have been the ner, and her brother the nis.

Her brother is the keeper of all the lore and writings that exist in her small village in what would now be called Southern Mirkwood. These are actually fairly extensive, and buried deeply in a waterproof, airtight container. He will not leave the Mirkwood without this history, and their parents will not leave without him. So Filegris hopes to buy a waggon and a draught-horse, so that she may haul both the book-hoard and her family out of the blighted woods to safety.
