Letter to Belegos

We agreed when we met in Imlad Gelir that we would ride to the coast, to Celondim initially. Having spent a few months wandering, perhaps spending a few months in one place, and that a place Estarfin had said he would like to see again, would be a good thing to do.

It only took him three days to prepare. He left a map for Lord Veryacano, detailing the path we would most likely follow, and our goal, in case he was needed back urgently. I hoped that summons would not come, though reading the signs of the times, it was quite possible. This time, if Estarfin was called to action, I would go too. I had not told him that yet. Neither had I told him of the battle experiences I had already, preferring for a little while longer to keep them to myself. Let him think I had only ever been at the outer edge of any conflict. I would speak if and when I deemed the time right.

Now we could not find Belegos in those few days. It may have been that he had ridden away intentionally and for some time. Or he may have been called away briefly, or even distracted. Three days was truly but the blink of an eye. So it was I wrote a letter, and left it with Sogadan, in case Belegos returned soon to find us away.

Belegos, dearest brother and friend,

I write that you know Estarfin and I are riding west, to Celondim. We will not travel swiftly, and may well halt often, but we shall follow the main path of the old wandering Noldor as far as we may. After the Last Bridge we shall follow not far from the road until we reach the Mannish lands, then keep ourselves to the edges of their sight. More than likely we shall cross the Barrow Downs and the Old Forest. Of course they are somewhat fearful of those places, so less likely to disturb us. You will remember the regard Estarfin holds them in, and I want no confrontations. From there we cross into the lands of the Shire and make for Needlehole. The rest of the trail will be off road through Yondershire until we reach Ered Luin.

We head to my halls. Ask any at the docks and they will give you clear guidance, for my household moved to a quieter part of the outer village. If your travels bring you near the coast, please come and be welcomed. We both had hoped to have your company awhile longer at the least.

You are missed.
