The dream

Moisture. Moisture is all he could feel, as if it draped him in a blanket. He stood tall, frozen inside a dark cloud. Eternities… that’s what it felt like. Again and again, the dream came to him, plaguing him every night for the past fortnight. It had always been the same… but this time, he could feel more. His arms remained down at his side, even as he willed them to move; to do something. But he couldn’t. He once more, began to let himself sink back into the dream… until his body moved.

It turned, facing him the way he had never seen before. He tried to resist, to fight off the involuntary movement. He couldn’t. He felt the soft stone scrape against the bottom of his bare feet. His feet were barren this time. The thought was cut quickly from his mind as his body finished the turn. In the distance he could see it. A small light, no more than a shimmer off the water. Water. He was surrounded by it, standing on nothing more than a small island of loose stones. It was still dark, the water likely went down farther than the tallest mountains he had seen. He watched as small waves danced along in the light, finally able to hear the soft sounds of the water. But even still, he could feel the abyss beneath the surface.. like a nightmare waiting to surface.

His body moved on its own once more. He couldn’t stop it, as his foot moved and hovered over the abyss, until it finally stepped down. He braced, ready to plummet into the sea.. but all that came, was a small splash. He stood on the waters surface, the soft waves lapping at his feet as his body readied for the next step towards the light. He left the stones behind, the safest place in the abyss.. and his legs carried him away.. but towards a new goal. The light.

The dwarf slowly blinked his eyes, rays of sunlight dancing over the tips of the hills and through the branches of the tree. He was back again, in the waking plane. Bree.. he was in Bree, resting in his hammock as the goats grazed around him. He let his head fall back into the hammock, a defeated sigh escaping his lips. Right when he was going to get answers.
