Scout's Ledger: 12 January: Andrath

The weather continues to be unseasonably agreeable, though the vast amounts of melting snow have created a bit of a mess in the form of slushy mud no matter where one sets one's feet.

The "bottle cake" that I received from the kind hobbitess will be tested today, I think. There has been little activity around the ruined fort, and I think a small fire can be safely managed on the sheltered side of this rock, away from the road.

I tried my hand briefly at capturing a drawing of the fort, as it seemed easiest, with its straight lines and angles. But I am not happy with the result. Is it any wonder? I cannot go to town for the benefit of sitting at the feet of artistic masters and teachers. Still, it is a way to pass the time. I may try another sketch later.

My thoughts remain with my companions, though I try not to spend the hours filled with useless worrying. Worry will not help them. The best help I can offer is to do what is required of me, quietly and without complaint, and always with my focus on the higher cause that brings each of us to these places in our lives.
