A Short Guide to the Notable Families of the Shire - Chubbs

Chubbs

The Chubb family shares a similarity with the Burrowses in that there is not one single area of the Shire where they can be found in greater numbers. But unlike the Burrowses, Chubbs are not so populous, but are held in no less regard. On the contrary, perhaps, the Chubbs might be considered more respectable than most, given that they have never been known to anything abnormal.

It was Adamanta Chubb’s marriage to Gerontius Took (1190-1320), otherwise known as the Old Took, that brought the Chubb name to prominence. Her union with the Thain resulted in the birth of a remarkable twelve children during the thirty year period between 1232 and 1262, which remains an unbeaten record. Following Adamanta’s example, many more Chubbs found marriages into well-to-do families, allowing their respectability and prestige to rise considerably.
