H A R K M O R N
Born to be the third son of Calgalin, son of Volbroin, son of Brolin, the Dwarf Harkmorn was the younger sibling of Rukhmorn and Salgalin. His birth in 2815, the Dwarf would come to be his father’s favoured son. As war came to Frithdal, the Lord Calgalin grew increasingly irritated by his firstborn’s love for reading; indeed his own father, the Lord Volbroin, had fallen at Azanulbizar. Rukhmorn, the Lord’s second son, was equally scholarly: though not as weak, he favoured the crafts over the art of war and management.
Early in his life, Harkmorn was noted as being particularly bright. Good with both an axe and numbers, he witnessed every council meeting with his father, and every hearing in the Chamber of Bralthris; such an honour was not readily given to Salgalin, the Lord’s first son, whom was rarely invited to attend such events. In many of these gatherings and debates, Salgalin was mocked, his brother Harkmorn glorified. This did not cause the Dwarf to become arrogant, however, and though the councillors would praise him for better favour with his father, he rarely took notice. Harkmorn was fixated instead on pursuits of knowledge: happenings in and out of Frithdal, administration techniques, the keeping and management of wealth, the past additions and changes to Frithdalian law.
Ever loved most by his father, Harkmorn was put through rigorous training for war; by his twentieth year, the Dwarrow was learning of battle tactics and the use of different weapons. He was taught to criticise his failures, and those of others, to improve and build upon his own understanding. Out of the fear that he may not be prepared for a real battle, the Lord Calgalin made certain that his third son would experience the true thrill of fighting. As such, there was little in the way of kind treatment as a result of his noble blood; the Lords of Frithdal were, by their very heritage and nature, never truly above all others. Bralthris took for his throne a mere bench, and every Lord of Frithdal placed the circlet upon his head himself; Harkmorn would not be spared any physical pain that came with training. No punishments were given to those that struck him in mock-fights.
A Dwarrow of rapidly increasing skill, far greater than his brothers, Harkmorn took as his idols the great Lords of Frithdal. He sought to have the might of Valgalin, the administrative genius of Brolin, and the courage of Valantris Firefoe (the father of Brolin; whom fought against the regency put in place during the reign of his own father).
In his eighty-fifth year, the Dwarf would marry; one of the Longbeards in the West he would have for a wife. It was seventeen years later that his first son, Garmorn, was born; then five more till his second son, Argmorn.
Ever-growing in might, intellect and wisdom, the Dwarrow would witness few major events, till the terrible Battle of the Five Armies.
With his father, the Lord Calgalin, the Dwarf was to find himself in the Iron Hills a mere month before calls for aid came from the lost kingdom of Erebor. Believing it to be their duty, both the Lord Calgalin, a veteran from Azanulbizar, and Harkmorn, his son, answered the beckon to war.
On the field of battle, the Lonely Mountain, once the great kingdom of Erebor, in view, they fought, armed with great-axes and mattocks. There, the Lord Calgalin would fall, and such would affect Harkmorn, whom saw him cut down by the spawn Bolg himself, for the rest of his life. The seventh (or indeed eighth, if the first Calgalin is to be counted) Lord of Frithdal was dead. Now, no less than two Lords of Frithdal had given their lives in the Great War with the orcs.
To his first son, Salgalin, now in his one-hundred-and-fifty-second year, went Frithdal and its holdings; unbeknownst to Harkmorn, his presence would become something of a threat.
Upon returning to Frithdal, his father’s body transported and buried in the hall, Harkmorn, aged one-hundred-and-twenty-six, already a veteran of war, was appointed Lawmaster of Frithdal; this position he held for a time, until fate, and keen ambition, led to his leaving. Furious and in fear of some dark betrayal, the Lord Salgalin would attempt to limit the advances of Harkmorn, yet he would still grow to hold perhaps more power than his brother himself.
Harkmorn was thus named Lawmaster of Frithdal in the year 2941; in this capacity, he served until 2950. In that year, he resigned, his replacement an obscure Dwarf named Ralti.
Quite against the will of his eldest brother, Harkmorn would move swiftly to strengthen his own line: founding, officially, the House of Harkmorn, he began work on directing his estate to greater independence. This ultimately led to him being deemed something of a threat by his brother, whom grew to fear his younger sibling with greater paranoia. Now having assembled a mercenary company under a captain loyal solely to him –his son– the Dwarrow was ever-guarded by, and able to command, a trained group of Dwarves. This was unsettling for the Lord of Frithdal.
Having received a Lord’s education, Harkmorn would come to multiply much of the wealth of Valantris’ descendents. Indeed, the third son of Calgalin was deemed to be the true son of Calgalin, and his reputation grew in Frithdal. Though not as famous as his distant relation Valgalin, the legendary commander and warrior of Frithdal, he was certainly known by all, loved and held dear.
Come the year 2998, however, Harkmorn would disappear. Unbeknownst to all at the time, he would leave Frithdal with haste: his motive unknown, his passing unseen, and his ability to leave without any other Dwarrow knowing questionable, he would not be seen for the next decade. Without his presence, his estate was slowly dismantled; some of his wares and holdings sold, his company disbanded, his home nigh abandoned, a form of chaos would ensue.
His son was the first to find him, in the year 3008, in the mountainous region north of Noglond and the Vale. How, exactly, Harkmorn had survived for so long, his presence presumably unknown, was not wholly understood; greater strangeness arose, however, when he was found to be insane. Spitting words under his breath, shivering in his newfound-home –an abandoned site, once used to house hunter-gatherers– the Dwarrow spoke of nonsensical threats to Frithdal, and of stones ever-falling from the sky. Indeed, the once-great son of Calgalin even believed stones, and small pebbles, spoke to him. Between the years 3008 and 3018, Harkmorn fell into obscurity, with few knowing whether or not the rumours of his madness were true.
