An Essay on the culture of the Hobbits
The Hobbits - A queer race, to some, in fact most likely queer to all but themselves. Much shorter than our own, shorter than the Elves, and even shorter than the Dwarves. Thus, they have acquired the name 'Halfling'. It should be noted, however, that the name 'Halfling' is a rather bigoted, a discriminative term used to insult the Hobbits.
This essay shall focus on their habits, and general culture.
To begin with, food. Hobbits are well-known for their many meals, of which there are five: Breakfast, Second Breakfast, Elevensies, Luncheon, Afternoon Tea, Dinner (Or, alternatively; Supper) - However this is just a generalised view, and one should understand that it is commonly a misconception as to a Hobbit's eating lifestyle. The famous, 'Bilbo Baggins' of the Shire (A famous 'Hero', and fabled Hobbit, if he is described by many of his own as having been 'Queer'), himself served only three meals at his 'eleventy-and-one-hundredth birthday'.
Hobbits enjoy many common, if hearty, dishes that range from simple bread and butter, to smoked fishes, of all sorts, and pies. They describe this food as 'civilised' and 'well-to-do'.
The next aspect of the Hobbit culture I'll be covering, is their simple lifestyle and culture. Most Hobbits are 'good' folk who enjoy fine brews of alcohol, good food, and 'peace'. So far, the Shire has been one of the most serene locations I, for one, have ever visited - If not awe-inspiring, one can truly relax on the green hills, or indeed under; For Hobbits commonly, though some choose not to, live under the ground, in Hobbit-Holes...
'Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat'*
Hobbits also enjoy gardening. As can be noted by the sheer size of many of their gardens, and farms - It would seem that most, if not all, Hobbits do enjoy that which grows. In my time, I have never smoked finer pipe-weed, nor ate fresher potatoes.
This delicate, 'lie-back' attitude to life has brought the Hobbits great peace, and a 'genuine' lifestyle in which rumors are passed around in gossip, jokes are drank down with fine ales, and stories are passed down as myth and legend to those, that are truly, eager to listen.
*Thank you, Grand-Master J.R.R. Tolkien. You created the perfect world, and described it with even more accuracy and perfection, in that quote.
