The Final Farewell

Time was flying during their travel to Celondim and then further to Mithlond. They talked about everything they could remember and enjoyed each other's company as much as never before. They knew it was the last time. Even when they arrived at the Havens, they still were in the best mood, all three of them.

And then suddenly, everything happened very fast. The last passengers to Valinor had arrived much earlier than estimated and the ship was ready to leave two days early. Plinnlim's heart missed a beat when her parents announced they would leave immediately. The Farewell was not as long and painful as Plinnlim had apprehended, but when she hugged her parents for the last time it felt so not real to her. She knew she saw them for the last time at the very moment, but the time had been too short to really take it in. For hours she sat at the shore, watching the ship disappear at the horizon, and even long after that she would not move.

And then it was as if she was alone in the snow storm again. Everything felt numb and cold. She did not have one clear thought. Friendly elves helped her to get back to the guest room where she was staying for the night. Luckily she was sharing the room with two others - otherwise she might have not gotten up the next morning. She should travel back home now, but somehow the thought of arriving in Imladris and not finding her parents there - not even her home where she had been born and grown up - was not too alluring to her. Her face pale and motionless she got onto the boat back to Celondim. The beauty of Mithlond seemed only cold to her.

When the boat arrived in Celondim she did not dare to trust her ears. Was somebody yelling her name? That could not be, could it? But then she looked up and saw two familiar figures standing at the dock, an elf and a dwarf. "Tweggi! Nogmeldir!" she yelled back with laughter. What did they do here in Ered Luin?

They had come for her! Her parents had been exchanging messages with them, messages of thanks first, for saving Plinnlim's life, and then they had informed them about their leaving. Here they were, just for Plinnlim! They were indeed her new family now. They spend a happy day together in Celondim, looking around - Tweggi was here for the first time - and eating the best things the cooks of Celondim had to offer. Later, they sat at a patio at the sea, and when Tweggi bid them goodnight, Nogmeldir seemed to realize that Plinnlim was afraid of going to sleep. So they kept talking all night, crying, laughing. Plinnlim was deeply saddened about losing her parents, but at the same time she was happy to have Nogmeldir with her.

When the first stars began to fade, Tweggi joined them again and brought some fruits. They sat together, ate, and Nogmeldir and Tweggi listened to what Plinnlim told them about her childhood. Only when the sky changed its colour to a deep purple, they got up and started their travel home. Plinnlim would come to the Misty Mountains with them and stay there for some time, until she felt strong enough to go to Imladris.

"Why do you have to live in Imladris at all?" Tweggi asked, jokingly. "I mean, who would want to live in such a valley, filled with noisy waterfalls, far too many trees that block your view, blazing colours that drive you crazy, when you can live on a quiet, snowy white peak instead?"
