The air was cold that night, and Deor was laying near the edge of the river, awaiting his death. There was not much to do for him, for he endured some hard times in the hands of his own kin. They beat him halfway to death, and left him to be eaten by bears or wolves.
He was not moving and was barely breathing. Some of his ribs were crushed, and the grass near his laying half naked body was covered in his blood. Life was fading out for Deorgast.
It was normal for Deorgast to suddenly disappear without notice, but only for a matter of days. It was usual for him to go on his casual strolls and endless journeys, to hunt or just to have some time alone with nature. Everybody knew that and how he was, but this time it was different. A few weeks passed and there was no sign of him, Deor was nowhere to be seen. No news from his whereabouts had reached his friends, and no traveler had sighted him for days. What happened to him?
