Outward Appearance

Finrost peers into the fireplace near Barliman's counter. His dark blue eyes reflect the stars dancing over Bree. The dwarves often compliment his long grey beard and hair tied into a tail. Hobbits find his stories beside the hearth exhilarating and rapturous. The children scamper around him as he trails through town, his wrinkled visage contorted in laughter. The craftsmen of Bree often find him outside the Combe gate shaping logs of different wood into pipes or other wood-craft. A keen observer will notice the satchel of worn leather slung across his left shoulder, bristling with books. The scholar is often found in the archives, poring over scrolls into the late watches; the custodian often replaces his candles because the wax stick is melted to the wick. His clothes are simple and weathered by mud and travel. In his eyes, one sees deep knowledge stretching back to untold ages. His mouth is slender and the color of his eyes is grey and blue.

Background

He hails from weary Gondor, where a Dark Shadow closes around Minas Tirith. A considerable scholar of ancient lore and pipe craft, Finrost wandered in the valley of Ithilien; a traveler might see him delving into dark places, conversing with rangers, or talking to beasts. When Mordor orcs crossed into Ithilien’s wilderness, Finrost drove them off the highway to Osgiliath. He inadvertently rescued a dozen refugees and led them to the outskirts of Osgiliath. Their hearts sank when they spied the city under siege by Sauron's murderous hordes; Finrost guided them to the island fastness of Cair Andros.

Within its strong walls, Finrost realized Gondor, alone, would not withstand Mordor's assault; fortunately, while ruminating on Gondor’s fate, he learned of Rivendell from a swallow in Ithilien. It had migrated south and perched in a tall oak tree, where he overheard a man conversing with someone about the hidden dell in the North. Filled with new hope, Finrost gathered his belongings and searched out passage up the Anduin.

After a few days, he met, by chance, a rider going North and asked to join his company. The rider agreed, and they bought passage up the Anduin, crossed the Caradhras from the Vale of Anduin, and then arrived in Rivendell. Rivendell’s loremasters taught Finrost many things, and it was here that he learned of the shadow in Angmar. Now with the growing tide of evil tightening the Girdle of Gondor, Finrost rides to Breeland to thwart this new threat and perhaps gain the help of the elves of Rivendell.

Friends
Relatives
Rivals/Enemies
Loves

Finrost loves swallows and other birds that perch beneath his gabled house. He's also a purveyor of leaves for smoking.

Hates

Finrost despises orcs and the wolves of Breeland; for he felt the hurt of many a marauding orc band in the vale of Ithilien. Long does he sit beneath the trees, watching for wolves and other beasts that might inflict harm on passersby.

Motivation

Finrost seeks council from Rivendell and hope for the land of Gondor in the coming darkness. With the threat of Angmar, he plans to help those resisting it's touch and perhaps earn the sympathy of the elves of Rivendell and their aid for Gondor.

Quotes

"The best pipe is maple; for it soothes the soul and pulls the fumes from the leaves for smoking."
