Breeland-born and bred, but with blood of a foreign father, Qais’ ancestry is betrayed only by his looks—black hair curled like southern princes...the height of a swan knight. Despite these winks at otherness, he is a Breeland man. He keeps to himself, rarely sharing his history, but the locals know by rumor and memory the circumstances of his birth and upbringing. His father, Gondor-born, had been known to haunt the Chet, running a racket of kidnapping and crime, before he disappeared when the boy was only three. Afterwards he was taken in by a wealth Southron and his Dalish wife and two other adopted orphans—Filisk and Freyga. He grew up outside of his new father’s love, or so it seemed to others, and found family amongst the guardsmen of Archet, in particular the Sergeant Curnden. Under him he trained as a lawman; the privileged skills granted by his father’s gentle status—horsemanship and literacy—were of particular use to the other illiterate footmen of the tribe. He lives in the homesteads, rarely seen outside his patrol and the boar-mantle that distinguishes his service to the Watch, but when he is, he is ready with a kind smile and a genuine ear.
