Background

General Details

Full Name: Garmorn, son of Harkmorn, son of Calgalin III of the Houses Valantris and Baraga, ‘Stonebeard’

Age: 101 years of age.

Race: Dwarf, Naugrim, Khazad.

Ethnicity: Birthplace unknown, Heritage in Erebor.

Location of Birth: Unkown.

Father: Harkmorn, third-born son of Calgalin III, son of Volbroin I of the House Valantris, ‘The Mad’

Mother: Kheaya Stomon, daughter of Burgor II, son of Hìsi VI of the House Baraga, ‘The Kind’

Current Residence: The Hall of the Uzbad of House Valantris; Thorin’s Halls

Occupation: Formerly mercenary and heir to the Manûr dynasty. Garmorn was rather young when he began his military-based lifestyle. However, this is not entirely odd; for he was above the age of sixty-five (the age at which no Dwarf under should ever travel).

Social Class at birth: Average-Upper. Garmorn was born as son to Harkmorn, third-born son of Calgalin III – thus he was directly related, by-blood, to his uncle, Salgalin, of whom is the current Uzbad of House Valantris and the first-born son of Calgalin III.

Social Class now: Average-Upper, formerly Upper-class. Garmorn has retained his position in his family, however he is no longer heir to the Manûr dynasty, for it no longer exists, and is thus no longer of the upper-social class (at its very peak, that is). Garmorn hopes to improve his own, and his father’s position; though it would now be difficult due to Harkmorn, his father, and his insanity.

Acquired Skills

Formal Education: Being directly related to the Uzbad of House Valantris, through his father, Harkmorn – the third-born son of Calgalin III, Garmorn was born officially a ‘noble’. His education reflected as much, and Garmorn was taught to read and write both in Khuzdul and Westron, while also being taught of war, tactics, and ‘how to fight’ – this much, the combat-training, was on an extreme level, for Garmorn was growing rapidly in size, and his father, Harkmorn, was, himself, a warrior (unlike Garmorn’s two eldest uncles, Rukhmorn and Salgalin).

Reading: Garmorn can read Westron and Khuzdul runes.

Writing: Garmorn can write in Westron (Common Tongue, English) and the secret language (to the Dwarves) of Khuzdul.

Education: Garmorn’s education was hefty – it consisted of learning to read and write fluently in Westron and Khuzdul, of combat, of strategies and tactics to use during war-time, and of crafting.

Combat: Being a Dwarf of giant size, that is: five foot four (most Dwarves will only ever grow to five foot. Garmorn is similar to the height of a short man, and were it not for his great stature and build, one may have easily mistaken him for being of the race of men. It would seem apparent that Garmorn has, as Salgalin and his brothers seem to, retained some of the aspects found in Valantris I ‘The Great’) – Garmorn is a great warrior. His strength is unmatched amongst his family, and this was used by his father, Harkmorn, to create a Dwarf of great combat-skill (though Garmorn suffers terribly from a wrathful temper, and he possesses more strength than skill).
Garmorn prefers to fight with two-handed weapons, although some claim, including Garmorn himself, that he is able to hold some weapons of such in one hand (the truth to this ambiguous at best, for it can be neither proved nor disproved with ease) – however he, having been taught to fight in such a way that he is shoulder-to-shoulder with others of his kin, can wield shields of great weight (though often, when one uses such a shield, they do not move much; instead acting as support, or vanguards to prevent the less-defended from being wounded).
Garmorn hates bows, and while he can admit that they have their uses, he refuses to believe that they should be used as weapons. The reason for this is most likely a result of Garmorn’s tough nature and temper, for ranged weapons do not require one to risk their life as much as melee weapons would.

Riding: Garmorn, like most (if not all) Dwarrows, dislikes, and even hates, animals of any kind. He would much prefer to walk than to ride.

Occupational skill: Formerly a mercenary, Garmorn is skilled enough; for while he lacks bartering skills, which are oft important within such an occupation, he is of great size for a Dwarf, and greater-yet of strength and endurance.
Once having been the heir to the Manûr dynasty, one can only say: Garmorn would have not been even close to his father, Harkmorn, in ruling or management capabilities. While Garmorn has some understanding of economics, and can read and write, due to his extensive education – he lacks social skills with those that are not of a similar nature to his own. Garmorn is not at all a good diplomat, and his horrible-temper would be the downfall of any conversation he may have with others, that strays too far from what he believes or wants. A key, and rather shocking, example of this would exist within his family! Garmorn once threatened the life of Salgalin, whom was and is the Uzbad of House Valantris, over a dispute concerning the immediate ‘capture’ of Harkmorn, who was becoming an issue and blackening the name of House Valantris, due to his insanity. While Garmorn later apologised, and was re-inherited (he had been disowned, for clear reasons), this has remained a stain on him, and his skills at speaking with others in such times; even to his lord, and own kin.

Workmanship: While not a master-craftsdwarf (craftsdwarf – not craftsman), Garmorn knows how to bend and craft certain metals, a skill that is rather useful when one is in constant need of repairing his or her own armour.

Cooking: Garmorn has little skill at cooking; but he finds it simple enough… Get ingredients, heat after preparing, eat.

Social skills: Hearty and joyful, Garmorn can bring cheer to any conversation; as long as it does not offend him or his kin in any way, shape or form… otherwise, one will find Garmorn to be loud, obnoxious, and threatening.
Garmorn, as discussed, has little diplomatic skill either.

Physical Appearance

Major Physical Distinctions:

  • ‘Odd Eye’ – One of Garmorn’s titles is, ‘Odd Eye’; it comes from the fact that Garmorn’s right eye is blue, but his left eye is green. The reason for this is rarely discussed in front of Garmorn himself… but, Garmorn has heard some of the theories (though he rarely says anything of them himself) – and the general belief seems to be from anything as random as he was born like that to anything as extreme as the eye came from an elf he killed – Garmorn took the dead Elf’s eye and replaced his own, to anything as feasible, depending on whom you would be, as his eye was removed during his torture, and he replaced it with a fake one. No one truly knows why Garmorn is ‘Odd Eye’, apart from Garmorn himself that is – and perhaps any others who have came to know.

  • ‘The Giant’ – Another one of Garmorn’s titles is, ‘The Giant’. This is, rather clearly, due to the fact that he is of great height for a Dwarf – standing at the extreme of five foot, four! Dwarves, at the very tallest, will normally grow to five-foot, if even that. Garmorn is also of a rather wide, muscular build, which causes him to look like a great being of great height and great strength. This is explained by his father, Harkmorn, as ‘being a result of my son’s (Garmorn’s) direct relation to Valantris the Great, the forefather of my kin. He was of great height, and now I am blessed to have a son of equal stature.’ – The House of Valantris, Volume One, Book One, Chapter Four: Of my kin and their beings (Not yet released on the Archives; it is currently planned to be released -by Harkmorn- when Book One is complete).

  • ‘Claw-Face’ – Yet another title that describes Garmorn in his literal physical features, is ‘Claw Face’. This is because of just how scarred Garmorn’s face is. One large, rake-like, slice runs vertically down his right eye. Four scratch-like scars, of which are rather jagged and terrifying to look at, are present on his left cheek (of which seem to look like a wound obtained by some manner of creature). Two small cuts are on his nose, horizontally on the bridge; the bridge of which is ‘bent in’ ever-so-slightly, hinting at the lost of flesh itself. On his chin is a large scar, running up from his chin, through his lips, to just under his nose. There are far more scars and signs of injury, though they look rougher and now appear normal in comparison to his major scarring. This sheer number of scars and cuts, places of injury, has led to Dwarrows questioning how Garmorn firstly came to get them, and secondly how he survived them. Being only aged one-hundred and one, Garmorn is not even half-way through the expected lifespan (of 250 years) for a Dwarf (Though of course he may die earlier, or even later), and so his injuries have brought even more wonder to his mystery.
Harkmorn states, ‘my son, Garmorn, is indeed a monstrosity; scarred, injured, weathered, and not pleasing to the eye. But: that is why I love him – for he is different, and unique… There is surely some reason as to why he, of all my brothers and their sons, of all my forefathers, of all my future children’s children, is so brutally scarred […] and indeed, scars cause fear in one’s opponent, and Garmorn shall have many opponents.’ – The House of Valantris, Volume One, Book One, Chapter Four: Of my kin and their beings (Not yet released on the Archives; it is currently planned to be released -by Harkmorn- when Book One is complete).

Scarring: Please see ‘Claw-Face’, above.

Signs of Age: Due to his extreme scarring (see: ‘Claw-Face’, above) and weathering, Garmorn would look much older than he actually is. Perhaps his sheer size would also cause some illusion on this matter.

Injuries, as of now: None. (This shall be updated for new injuries, all former injuries which have been healed or recovered from, will not be here).

Physical Appearance: Garmorn stands at five foot four, and is thus, in his own right, a giant. He has a broad chest, and broader-yet shoulders, giving off the look of him being some huge being. He is extremely scarred, especially upon his face, which would cause him to look rather rough, and ruin his chances of being perceived as handsome (At least, handsome when one uses the most-common, perhaps stereotypical, definition of the word).

Outward Appearance: Garmorn is large. He will often be wearing some kind of armour, and is often covering his head and face with a helmet of sorts; mostly to prevent others avoiding him for the sole reason of his scarring, although one should note: Garmorn is described by Harkmorn as being ‘proud of his scars – like a true warrior’. His voice would be deep and rough.

Height: Five foot four. 5’4’’

Body Form:  Endomorph (Please correct me if I’m wrong) – ((OOC: However, one should of course note that using a ‘real life’ scientific term to describe a human, will not be at-all accurate for a Dwarf within a fantastical world. Please don’t use this, ‘Endomorph’, to create an image of Garmorn. This part is simply here so that I follow the guidelines I’ve set myself, and it will most likely be changed or removed.))

Eye Colour: Right eye: Blue, Left eye: Green. (See: ‘Odd Eye’ above)

Hair Colour: Rich, light and hearty, brown.

Family

Father: Harkmorn, son of Calgalin III, son of Volbroin I of the House Valantris, ‘The Mad’

Mother: Kheaya Stomon, daughter of Burgor II, son of Hìsi VI of the House Baraga, ‘The Kind’

Siblings:

  • (Deceased) Argmorn I, second-born son of Harkmorn I, son of Calgalin III of the House Valantris (Deceased)

Marital Status: Unmarried.

Children: None.

Friends and Foes

Garmorn’s definition of a ‘Friend’: Someone who likes the same things, is interested or fascinated by battle, and loves to drink.

Garmorn’s definition of a ‘Rival’: Someone who offends Garmorn of his kin in any way, shape or form.

Garmorn’s definition of an ‘Enemy’: The obvious, like any Orc-Kind, and those who would seek to threaten Garmorn or any of his kin in any way, shape or form. Any who would be against, or insult, the Dwarven-folk in any way, shape or form.

Friends: None Garmorn would name openly…

Allies: His family, and any of their allies.

Rivals: It is not safe for one to reveal his rivals, so that they may act upon such knowledge.

Enemies: Orc-Kind (Rather vague – purposely as such), and those that would threaten Dwarves in any way imaginable.

Views on others

The Race of Men: Garmorn finds the race of Men to be in the background – for he has little to say about them, and is neutral on the matter.

The Race of Dwarves: Garmorn is a Dwarf.

The Race of Hobbits: Garmorn finds Hobbits to be rather queer folk; but, having revered the journey of Thorin and his company to the Lonely Mountain, and knowing that a Hobbit, what was it? Biblo Baggits?, was amongst them has caused him to have a deep interest in such folk. However, Garmorn has never met a Hobbit himself, and has only rarely seen them in Bree-Town, on his journeys eastward from Thorin’s Halls in the West.

The Race of Elves: While Garmorn does not hate the Elves, he does not like them either; and his upbringing (his father, Harkmorn having fought with Dain Ironfoot) has caused him to be ‘naturally’ distrusting of Elves. However, having lived in the far West of Middle Earth for a time, and having his kin more-or-less based there (what with the Hall of Salgalin being located there), Garmorn has slowly began to trust the Elves more; for he has seen many of them.

Specifics;

  • The Mayor of Bree – Garmorn’s father, Harkmorn was recently arrested and placed in the Bree-Town jails, only to be freed when Rukhmorn, Garmorn’s uncle and Harkmorn’s elder brother, travelled to the city and spoke with the mayor in person. This has left a bitter taste in Garmorn’s mouth, whenever the mayor is spoken of.

  • Salgalin Valantris – Garmorn has had his bad events with Salgalin, his eldest uncle, but he believes those events are of the past, and he hopes to rebuild whatever respect he may have once had.

The Key ingredients to Character Stew

General Personality: Thrilled by war, Garmorn loves the idea of battles; however, he is just as equally mournful of them – for his grand-father, Calgalin III, was killed in the Battle of the Five Armies, when fighting under Dain Ironfoot, alongside Harkmorn. Garmorn is hearty and joyful when with friends, and family, but he has a harsh temper that can cause him to seethe with absolute rage when angered, even by the smallest of things that would not normally anger others. He loves to drink ales of all brews, and is fascinated by crafting and his own peoples’ (that is, the Dwarves) skill at creating great halls that, in his eyes, can not be matched by any others.

Distinctions in behaviour:

  • Loves war and the idea of fighting for a just cause, whatever that may be.
  • Is fascinated by good craftsdwarfship (Yes, craftsdwarfship, not craftsmanship)
  • Terrible temper, Garmorn is angered by the very smallest of things.

General Philosophical Beliefs: Garmorn does not think much on philosophy, and what his mindset is; however, he is a firm supporter of cultural hierarchies – like that commonly found within Dwarven families and, or, lines: with an Uzbad, Izbad, and then vassals or lesser-lords whom serve the Uzbad and Izbad in turn. He also believes that a dead enemy is a good enemy, and has little sense of mercy; which he finds to be a sign of weakness, and even betrayal of one’s kin.

Character Traits;

  • Extroverted – Though often quiet, when Garmorn is with friends and family, and his own trusted kin, he is by-far extroverted. He prefers to have a hearty conversation, with ale and food, and lots of cheering, over silence.

  • A love of gold – Like most, if not all Dwarves, Garmorn is attracted to gold. Though not fanatically, for he does not possess a lot of it himself, he believes that gold, gems, and jewels, are a necessity to life, and thus prefers riches over humility or modesty.

  • Loyalty – While some may question how loyal Garmorn is, due to past incidents involving his Uzbad – it should be understood that Garmorn is extremely loyal… just not to whom one would expect him to be towards. In fact, Garmorn is quite willing to die, and would actually take joy in dying, for his House, and more specifically for his father, Harkmorn. Even though his father is quite clearly insane, Garmorn has remained by-far, as he sees it, the closest and most loving.

Chronicles by Garmorn

None, other than those that have been archived from my extensive remakes and changes to the character of Garmorn over a long period of time, in which I was roleplaying him ‘on and off’, and had several roleplay-ideas (House Valantris) ending and restarting several times. This profile is the finished product of Garmorn, and any future chronicles that may exist on him will be the finished ones.

A Short Background

Born as son to Harkmorn I, son of Calgalin III, son of Volbroin I, and Kheaya, daughter of Burgor II, son of Hìsi, Garmorn was part of two Houses, House Valantris and House Baraga. This meant that he was, by definition, a noble-born Dwarf, and his education reflected as much; for Garmorn was taught to read and write, fluently, in Westron and Khuzdul. He was taught, though lightly, economics and skills of diplomacy. He was also taught to fight, at a very young age, by his father, Harkmorn, whom wished to train his son into a warrior, just as he and his father were.
Garmorn was born on 4th February, of the year 2917, in the Third Age of this world. He was given the name Garmorn, similar to his father’s name of Harkmorn, and later his brother’s name of Argmorn – though the names were rather odd, there was some form of cultural reason, unknown to Garmorn, as to why their names ended with morn and were rather similar.
At the age of sixty-seven, Garmorn was already self-employing as a mercenary, and though he was very young, though not too young to go against Dwarrow culture of when a Dwarf is old enough to leave home and travel, and was growing to be a literal giant. He stood taller than most Dwarves of his age (not that he met many of his age, for the other Dwarves were oft much older, as one can presume) and was far stronger than most Dwarves.
Garmorn would soon become the heir to a dynasty, which would later be ended by himself, for reasons concerning a mad father and a lost home; all of which shall soon be explained.

OOC: This ‘short background’ is purposely uninformative and reflects only what information has already been given in the profile, as I have plans to make a chronicle concerning this, and the character Harkmorn has similar planned chronicles.

Thank you for reading

Out of fear of straying too OOC, as with my previous profile plans; I’m going to leave this with a simple thank you for reading, and I hope to meet you all in roleplays and the like.
