She's A Rainbow

She’s A Rainbow

(I wrote this poem for the Fed Poets Society roleplaying event held in the Shire in June 2024.  The themes were ‘Colour’ and ‘Imagery’, but I played with rhyme as well.  Contrary to certain rumours this was just a bit of fun on my part – if anyone knows the maid in question, I’d love to meet her!)

Oft times in my bed at night,

Kaleidoscopic, in my sight,

There comes a dream, a vision fair,

A skipping maid of beauty rare.

She meets my gaze with eyes of hazel,

Coyly seeking my appraisal,

Then skips away through fields of green,

No lovelier sight I’ve ever seen.

Upon her head she wears a crown,

Atop her locks of golden brown,

Her cheeks ablush, like blood-red rose,

Sweet dimples, impish upturned nose.

Her skin, unblemished, creamy white,

Glows soft, with incandescent light,

Her neck, as graceful as a swan’s,

Where rests a band of burnished bronze.

Like Cupid’s bow, with lips of pink,

She blows a kiss, then with a wink,

Kicks off her shoes of saffron yellow,

Struts a lively saltarello.

Her gauzy gown of deepest red,

Is spun from finest silken thread,

Her voice does sound like silver bells,

In song, of ancient times she tells.

Upon her fingers, golden rings

She seems to fly on fairy wings,

Until my vision fades to grey,

And she is lost in light of day.

As I do wake, my thoughts turn black,

I dearly wish to call her back,

Until I dream again, my hue

Will be a heartsick shade of blue!
