(This letter is written in elegant hand, though it also appears to have been written in great haste.)
To a Miss Finchley, who I am told will be returning to Bree-town in what was once Arnor:
I respectfully convey my greetings despite how strange it must be for you to get a letter from a person you have never met. However, your name has be spoken by others in my company - namely, Master Hawk, and thus, I have some estimation of who you are. Hence, I felt compelled to send you this letter after the course of recent events have taken a drastic turn regarding Master Hawk, whom I have been made aware is dear to you.
I do not write this to alarm you and beg your pardon if you should find yourself in such a state. But, I only felt it right that you should be made aware of the happenings surrounding him in this fair city of Dol Amroth near Belfalas. Out of respect for things that I am not entirely sure he would be comfortable with being written about in such a letter, I will keep this is brief and informative as I can make it.
Master Hawk was recently taken from our company by a retinue of guardsman who we were told served the Steward of Gondor, hailing from Minas Tirith. He was charged with a lengthy list of crimes and the guardsmen seemed to be under the impression that his presence in the land of Gondor was to be considered a threat. Indeed, it came as a complete shock for many of us and there was naught any of us, not even the esteemed Princess Lothiriel or her champion, could do to stop them. I for one do not believe any of the charges are true, but my word and the word of others here seemed to count for nothing.
Being that your name was brought up more than a few times in conversation, I only felt it right that you should receive this news, however sorrowful I am to write of it. Please be assured that none of us intend to leave him to the mercy of those who do not have his best interests at heart. I know that will be of little comfort to you, who are so very far away from here.
Nevertheless, I send my well wishes to you and encourage you to not despair.
Yours respectfully,
Calidis of Rivendell
