The sunlight was warm in the field, but a cool wind often danced by. Elane sat beneath the shade of a tree, the dappled light from the canopy above bespeckling her as the leaves rustled in the wind. Resting her head back against the trunk of the tree, her eyes gazed out over the rolling grassland. The peaceful ambience was lovely, a welcome change from the bustle and noise of Bree. Elane adjusted her shawl, her feet pressed into the earth, cool from the shade. It was times like this where she would become lost in her thoughts, running off with her imagination. She entertained herself by watching a swallow in the distance, darting around between the grass. Elane wondered what it would be like to be a bird, to be able to fly and see the world from that perspective. How small the world must seem from up there...
However, a nearby twittering brought her back. She blinked, looking around for the source of the sweet sound. Just as she turned her gaze back forward, she noticed a little bird flutter onto her knee.
"Oh!" She exclaimed softly. "Hello there, little one".
The bird, as blue as a cornflower, turned it's head at her, chirping. Elane smiled fondly.
"What brings you so far down from your perch? Surely the ground is not as exciting as the tree. You must see a lot from up there, and in the sky."
The bluebird blinked at her.
Elane laughed quietly. "I'm truly sorry, but I do not have any food for you. Had I known I would meet you, I certainly would have brought something along for you."
The bird ruffled it's feathers, chirping as it hopped around on her knee before it swooped down towards the ground, pecking at the earth.
"Do you like to fly? It must be awfully tiring," she wondered aloud. "But perhaps you might not even be better off walking. It would take longer, and far too risky."
Elane played with a lock of her hair as she sat there with the bird, which was now hopping about and scratching around for something to eat. Her soft blue eyes looked to the bluebird again.
"I wonder what it's like up there?" She mused, turning her gaze upwards. "You could see the tops of mountains, valleys.. entire forests and cities."
She quietened then, slipping back into her thoughts for a brief moment before she felt something soft brush against her hand. The bluebird was there, fluffing itself up as it cheeped at her.
Elane laughed. "You probably have no idea what all these noises I'm making are. You sound much more lovely when you twitter away."
The little bird blinked up at her for a moment before it began singing away, the pleasant birdsong making her smile.
Elane stayed there in those fields for a while, even after the bluebird fluttered off to go about it's day. Tucking her shawl up around her shoulders, she let out a content sigh.
