Anonymous Wilderness Interview - Part the Seventh

Part 7: Self Image, Etc.

84. Describe the routine of a normal day for you. How do you feel when this routine is disrupted?

"Mm… get up, do what's gotta be done, try and get some sleep after. When I'm working, my days are about loose plans and long-term goals. And when I ain't… I got even less to define them. Ain't much 'routine' to any of it, or much to be disrupting. And that don't love much to be worryin' bout for disruptions."

85. What is your greatest strength as a person?

She sighs, then smirks. "Being too stubborn to give up."

86. What is your greatest weakness?

She smirks more. "Being too stubborn to give up. Aye, I were kinda counting on you asking that next."

87. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

"Just like earlier, about trying to change one event… I don't reckon there's a way to change just one thing, and not change too many other things by side effect. And even the things I don't like… they're what make me who I am, and who other people somehow manage to rely on." She shrugs. "If'n I weren't mostly happy with who I am, that'd be a depressing answer. But I mostly am."

88. Are you generally introverted or extroverted?

"Introverted. Ain't no real question about that."

89. Are you generally organised or messy?

She chuffs with a shake of her head. "Do you walk to work, or carry your lunch? Some folks is real 'tidy', but ain't organised. Some folks got organisation that's all spread out and looks messy, but it ain't just been knocked about by the cats or whatever."

She shrugs. "But most of what I have gotta fit in saddlebags, and be some'at I can pick out without emptying them to get at. And I don't like clutter in my rooms I got. So I reckons I count for both tidy and organised."

90. Name three things you consider yourself to be very good at, and three things you consider yourself to be very bad at.

"Mm. Good at… being a smart-ass, sneaking and scouting, and giving flippant answers to questions I don't take very seriously. And bad at… taking some kinds of questions seriously, retiring, and being a proper lady."

91. Do you like yourself?

"Aye. At least mostly." She chuckles. "Much as I like most folks, even."

92. What are your reasons for being an adventurer (or doing the strange and heroic things that RPG characters do)?

"Mm. Kinda fell into it, in some ways, and in others, kinda feel like I owe it to certain people. But that's… I let myself feel that. I could change that if'n I wanted to. No, the real reason got a bit more to it. Makes some folks upset with me when I say it, but you did ask.

"Most folks, if'n they go out to do what I do, they don't come back. At least not so often as I do. So, if'n I don't do it, others gotta try – and not live through it. And by not doing the work, I'd basically be choosing for them to die. I'm good at what I do, and it needs doing. And the doing saves lives, even besides those of others who might die trying. That's why I do what I do."

93. What goal do you most want to accomplish in your lifetime?

"I'd like to be making enough difference in what I'm doing to see the Enemy defeated. But the struggle's been going on too long to be seriously hoping for that. I'll be satisfied if'n I've made a few lives better, I reckon. I don't need much. I ain't no hero of legend."

94. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

She snorts. "Considering what I do? Scattered wherever the carrion-birds have dropped my bones, most likely. Otherwise, I'm young enough I'll still be doing what I been doing, because I'm too stubborn to change."

95. If you could choose, how would you want to die?

"Mmh. Considering every mortal's gotta die sometime, I reckon, despite how my grand dream is being part of actually defeating the Enemy… I can't see old age being how I'd go. So I reckon I'd hope to go quick in battle, and not lingering in loads of pain."

96. If you knew you were going to die in 24 hours, name three things you would do in the time you had left.

She snorts softly. "Where we are right now, I'd be giving Cerrynt a map, and a pile of coins, and six horses, and explaining she should get away from me so whatever gets me don't get her. I ain't sure if'n you'd count three in that, but from here, there ain't nothing else for it.

"And in general, as much as I'm on the road, I can't necessarily say three things, because like just now, it'd be about doing the best I can for my mission. But in town? Leave a report, find and say farewell to those I could get to in time for that, or leave notes if not, and make sure my coins and other property had sensible disposition."

97. What is the one thing for which you would most like to be remembered after your death?

She shrugs. "What little is known about what happens to us after we die… I ain't so sure that being remembered is even something I care about that much. I mean, I got friends, including Elves, so I reckon I'd hope to be remembered fondly for a real long time… but even then, long's it be mostly good memories, I ain't worried about just what for. And if you mean like, remembered for some big accomplishment? Well, we already been over that. I ain't worried about having such. Small ones will do."

98. What three words best describe your personality?

"Mmh. Stubborn, kind-hearted, and quiet? Maybe? That's a lot like your earlier 'three good and three bad' one for me, but more worth trying to answer. But consider how long most of my answers have been. Just three words? Ain't my strong suit."

99. What three words would others probably use to describe you?

She laughs, shaking her head. "Now that would depend on which others, I reckon. I mean, 'just three' is going to depend on which things matter most to them to pick out to describe. Mm. 'Stubborn, kind-hearted, and snarky.' That might be your average. Or not. But it's the best I got for that kinda question."
