2. Eyes on the Hills

It was the last post on that evening, farmer Ern nailed it where the door was going to be, placing it horizontally over the door was going to be on the barn that he was making. The past weeks were great, the weather was good, it only rained once, so it allowed him to work on the structure more and be within the time he gave to himself, his wife, Aggy would give birth to their second, a son this tme, and Ern wanted to prepare everything for more animals. More animals, more produce, more trade, more coins, more food. He took off his belt with the tools, wrapped it and put it in a bag, he also took his straw hat to put on and put his bag on his back. With a smile, Ern, patted his horse's mane and stepped on the stirrup before swinging his other leg and landing on the saddle, he lead the horse South and made his way back to Bree.
He had the hills on his left as he was going down the main road towards the town, it was dark, a little later than usual, but he didn't mind, he knew that he was safe, bandits wouldn't attack someone who had no money on him, nor his family, was his thought, so he didn't mind travelling at night. "After all, the know whom to hit, and I am a poor man, they won't get anything from me!" were often his words, whenever someone, or more ferequenlt his wife, was scolding him that habit. This evening was no different, he only had his old tools on him and his old horse, nothing of value, truly. He enjoyed the cold wind on his face, looking around, enjoying Bree-land's silence. He was sweating, despite the wind the labour was hard, building a barn on his own and he took the hat of and whipped the sweat from his forehead.
As he did, he turned his head to the left, wiping it against his sleeve he saw something on the hills to the left. Two flickering lights on the tallest of the hills, as if two eyes that were looking at him. He looked at them as if dazed at first, but soon he leaned forward to make the horse go, they were far from him, but still scary to watch, two lights in the night, under the moon... He went on and on and with the corner of his eye he saw them moving the way he did, slowly, always to his left. He kept his attention on them, though his head was turned forward and suddenly he stopped, the lights stopped as well, the moment he did... His heart started to beat rapidly, now truly scared and leaned forward once more to make the horse go on, trying to look as if he didn't notice anything. The lights were going on and on with him, making him even more sweaty, but he did not dare stop again, he just went on and on, hoping he would be within the range of Bree soon to make the old horse gallop and get within the safe walls.
But the road was long, the lights were bright and the moon above dark, he didn't notice at first but now he did, even if he'd curse himself for it. The sky wasn't bright anymore, it was dark as many dark clouds gathered to hide it. The lights seemed even brighter in the complete darkness and his breath cut for some moments, he struggled to control it and when he did he stroke the mane of the horse again, urging it to go on. Keeping his head ahead he was focused on the lights, those menacing lights that were looking at him moving along the line of the hill with him and when he saw the walls of Bree in the distance he leaned forward more, making the horse gallop. In a hurry he entered the Gates and rode to his home, wanting to forget what he saw.
