The Reeve's Verdict

(Just a brief glimpse of a longer scene.)

Faerhild and her older brother, Saexwyrd, stood in front of their Lord to hear his verdict about their recent acts against the Reeve and his Witan. The sister had set convicted men free of their prison, hoping they would help her to save the Captain of the town. The brother stood accused  because he had witnessed her commit this crime yet had been too soft-hearted to stop his sister.

Her heart rushed in her chest, wide-eyes of anticipation observing their leader in humble silence as he spoke his decision at the end of their trial;

"I know you two since you were children, you chased each other in this hall, played with my children... with my sons... It pains me to see you stand accused before me. You went against my word in times of war, when obedience is of outmost importance. That I know.But I know your hearts as well and I know they beat for Forlaw and for our people. So hear my decision. You tied your fates to that of those men you set lose. And so it will be that if they are accused for any crime within Riddermark you will answer for it. And take the punishmet for it... And for you Faerhild this I have to add. You are a scout in our Eored but no ranks you will serve as Gyric commands and no ranks you will gain until you have proven your obedience can match your bravery. As for you Saexwyrd it saddens me to say, you cannot be seen by my side, as my guard or a member of my Witan when you go against my word. You are at Gyric's disposal to find a use for you and I know you have many. Maybe in the years to come you will learn the words needed to persuade our people to obey our laws...Now go the both of you before I change my mind."

The siblings backed away, afraid to utter even their gratefulness for their Lord's mercy.
