The Jewel of Urs Mafangûn

A few moons away from Durin's Day in the year 1971 of the third age, a dwarf jewel-smith named Nurvi found a remarkable red gem in the depths of Khazad-Dûm. While this gem could have served as a great addition to Durin's hoard of precious stones, Nurvi took it for his own and had no intention of sharing it with anyone. He spent a full day polishing the stone until it was smooth and round. The red glow of the jewel was so vivid that it seemed as if fire lived within the stone - id-'ibinu urs mafangûn. Nurvi called it kurdû uslukh or Dragonheart. He kept this precious stone with him at all times and when he died in a mining accident, it was passed on to his sons whom fought over it. Most conveniently, two of the three sons died when Durin's Bane awoke in 1980. The only living brother, Narfi, took the gem with him together with all the precious jewelry his father had forged and fled west into the blue mountains with his kin. Dragonheart became one of our family's heirlooms and rests safely within our vaults at Stouthammer Hall within the Blue Mountains.
