The Arrival Of Winter

Spectators turned out in huge numbers to marvel at the ancient Elven celebration, which marks the end of summer and the arrival of winter. In ancient times the late harvest festival of Serkerë ('blood-day') marked the start of winter. At this time animals were slaughtered for meat to provide food throughout the coming winter. The night was celebrated with torch processions, bonfires and feasting. At this time also the dead were remembered and honored, in silence and with song.
The Elves eventually ceased to celebrate the festival of Serkerë as before. Instead the day became known as Laitairín, the Hallowmas. Elves would observed a silent vigil at the setting of the sun, in remembrance of all who had suffered or been sacrificed in the dark days and held a lantern procession.
Similar celebrations are also observed in the Shire where hobbits celebrate the arrival of winter remembering ancestors and love ones that have passed away, whilst the bonfires and fireworks embody the 'light' fires, lit to ward off the darkness and the approach of winter. With the arrival of the fresh snowfall, the Shire' and Breeland Weather Watch Departments are reminding riders to adjust their riding habits according to road conditions.
