An Unexpected Discovery

Hobbits in the Shire have uncovered an old door by The Party Tree in what is described as the most important find for generations. Specialists say this could be evidence of a fabled treasure Mr Bilbo Baggins is said to have hidden deep underground, in a network of tunnels under his former residence Bag End.

Miss Opal Goodbody who is working on the site said the find is one of the most important in the Shire for “decades”. Among the artifacts dug up are bones, jewellery, leather shoes, glass bottles, and ancient tomes and maps.

Originally the site, which home the open-air kitchens on The Hill, was being cleared to make way for a new oven in preparation for the annual Harvest Festival. Holfast Burrows said he uncovered a bounty of archeological relics, however very mysteriously some of his personal belonging have gone missing during the work. He was very startled and said to our reporter : What a terror! I ventured pass the door, for I was sure there would be treasure tucked away in every corner. I swore I wouldn't leave until I came away with a few riches. But Instead of jools at the bottoms of various jars and whatnot, I found the most horrible things instead! Sticky, cold, wet, terrifying things. Unnatural things!'

We must stress Mr Burrow's account has not be independently verified. Mr Adalgrim Goodbody said: “This will be one of the most important finds on The Hill for decades and one of the best ones we’ve been involved with. It’s hugely exciting." Talks are underway to convince Mrs Lobelia Sackville-Baggins to open the underground site to visitors. It is believed that one of the silver spoon that once belong to Mr Bilbo Baggins is in fact the secret key to the newly discovered door. Once permission is granted the site will be open to the the public.

Every hobbit from Hobbiton to Michel Delving is talking about what may lurk in the dark and twisty tunnels that run beneath Bag End. Did old Bilbo hide his treasure there? Did he leave anything to guard it? Some even whisper that Gandalf the wizard put a curse on the place to keep the nosy neighbors away , but surely that wouldn't stop tourists and visitors with a keen interest in  history and archeology from trying to find out! But beware, gossip has it that in those dark tunnels and cellars not all is what it seems.
