The Hardest of Trials

When Redwick and Therwen had made their way to Snowbourn the had sun had begun setting behind the mountains, the skies with orange and beautiful; few clouds flew above them and the skies were almost clear.
Redwick himself has no steed, thus he rides with Therwen on her steed that he gifted to her; Goldwine he is named and he is strong, proud and loyal. At once Therwen brought Goldwine into a sudden halt and Redwick looked upon her with curiousity and confusion, though her face was serious, 'Have you noticed, Red?' she asked him and he still looked confused having not knowing what she had spoken of. 'Noticed what?' He asked her and she placed her hand down onto her abdomen, 'My stomach.' she said to him and he laughed in amusment. 'Yea, I have. You are getting fat, Therwen.' He said to her and she could only laugh at that, 'No!' She exclaimed with amusement in her tone. 'You have not guessed yet? Haven't you noticed my moods lately?' and at that Redwick thought for a while, pondering upon her words.
'I have noticed, but I did not suspect that they meant anything.' He said with a shrug, 'Women's moods change swiftly sometimes.' Then she looked back to him for a while in silence.
'I am with a child, Red.' She said and his eyes opened wide and he looked to her in disbelief. He did not know what to think of it and he could hardly speak, 'What?'
    'It's true.'

And for a while they sat so in silence as the sun set entirely yonder the mountains, there was naught but an orange glisten upon the horizon still remaining and a soft wind blew upon their faces as they looked down the road to Snowbourn where they could see the distanced yellow lights of torches shining at the gates and within the guard towers, some orange lights shining through what windows they could see through the wide gate. Though Redwick's heart beat was swift against Therwen's back where he sat, his face began to soften and he felt at peace - which was quite unusual to him. 'How?' He asked her in some disbelief, 'Isn't that obvious?' She said back to him and he nodded his chin lightly onto her shoulder as some silence fell upon the two for a while. 'I'm going to be a father. Can I be a father?'  Redwick thought to himself, having a mixture of feelings towards this and he thought in the silence again. Gathering the words in his mind that made sense of what he felt, thus he spoke soon to her. 'Therwen, I do not know if I can be a father. I very much doubt that I can, for there is naught(or little) in me that is significant in being a father. But I am gladdened, for I love you Therwen, and if I am to be a father then it is good to know that you shall be the mother. I shall do what I can.' His words pleased her somewhat, but then she said to him, 'I must speak with my father. Once she is old enough I will give the child to him to protect and raise.' This put Redwick at ease, for then he had little worries of being a father. Though there was one, 'Therwen. I am to be a father, and though I doubt my skill as one I shall try my best. I shall not speak against your wish to let our child in the care of your father, Therwen, but...' He looked to her with a stern gaze, 'But... I will come to see my child when I find fit, if still the child would wish to see me as her father then I will do my best to be his or her father. I know that I may not always be here when he or she is in need of me, but I can still offer that and on that I cannot be gainsaid, not even by you, Therwen.' A look of displeasure came to Therwen's face and she spurred Goldwine into a slow walk towards the city of Snowbourn and Redwick held onto Therwen's stomach all the while.
