Terry's Growing up

When Terry was only a little lad he often had troubles with some other kids in Bree. There were times when the poor boy was bullied, he tried to verbally defend himself many times but the barrage of constant insults of his head being large was too much to bear from several other lads and lasses. Thus he sniffed, and sniffed again and gradually cried and fled from his tormentors whilst mucus dripped from his nostrils, and tears came raining from his eyes. Those are the times when he would seek to find a corner or some quiet place where he can find solitude and hide away from those who would seek to trouble him. One day when this took place he ran through the gates of town and sat with his back leaned up against a tree whilst he cried snot, tears and rather loud wailing. He thought that it would go unheard in the woods, he did not want anyone to see him crying because he thought that they would only insult him more.

Suddenly he felt a thud on his head and his crying was stopped by his curiosity. Nearby he noticed a pine cone that wasn't there before and he sought to grab it but then there was another thud, and another, and then suddenly a rather hard thud and he leaned his back up against the tree again and cried even louder. His young mind could not fathom what was happening and he was somewhat afraid. Were there monsters in the tree? Perhaps. He suddenly heard something heavy fall lightly onto the grassy floor of the woods. Then he was even more afraid because he thought that the monster would eat him or something worse. But as the monster demanded his attention he looked up to her. Yes, the monster was a she and not just any she, it was little Wrenna who enjoyed climbing trees and she was not pleased at some one else intruding near her tree. In her hand there was a stick and little Terry who was now less afraid stood up, but to his dismay she suddenly jabbed at him with the stick! Of course he fell onto his back side and went crying again, even louder than before. Now she might never have managed to get Terry to move away from her tree until there was a hoarse squeal and a rustle in nearby bushes. Out came a boar and Wrenna yelled to Terry to get onto his feet and run. Witless in his tears he did not understand nor listen to her. Now Wrenna wasn't very cruel or mean, she wouldn't leave little Terry to face his demise to a boar and she grabbed him and dragged him across the floor until he would gather his wits enough to run on his own.

In that way they eventually made it back to Bree in one piece(or two, considering that they are two different people). Now Terry was too horrified to even cry any further and he looked to Wrenna thankfully, in that way he softened her enough and she listened to his tale of why he had been crying in the first place. She was displeased with all those who bullied Terry and she took him with her and went to find them, she still had her stick and she was not happy. If ever one is to fear a little girl, it would be those who made Terry cry that day. She took her stick and gave a strong prod to the boy who was the main influence in the bullying, and where she the prodded him I shan't tell you. But know that he felt its pain for a while before he would recover. Some of the kids were afraid of Wrenna because she was often very bold when she had need to, especially when it came to protecting Terry who too often found himself in trouble with other the kids.

Now as he grew up Terry knew that Wrenna wouldn't always be there to protect him, he was in his own way a gentle lad. He liked horses, playing games and he grew rather fond of Wrenna, more fond than he would have liked to admit in those days. There were some days when he would end up in a fist fight with some other boy who insulted him more than he could bear. It wasn't always easy for him to turn his back when he was made fun of, especially to those who tried to get along with. Even after a fight he would still return to them and want to be friends with those who he fought with. Why? Well because he didn't want either to be shunned from the larger groups of friends in those days and of course they would forget and pretend most times as though it didn't happen until some one went and told to their parents about what happened. Then things would become more trouble than any of the kids wanted.

When Terry became a teenager he slowly drifted away from the larger group of folks and found himself often in the company of those who one might deem a misfit. He didn't really care much about that, he just liked to have a few friends to talk and play with when he was lonely, and that they did. He never distanced himself from Wrenna and always spoke with her more than any others. He might have teased her every now and then but that was only because he really wanted her attention even at the cost of making her mildly upset at him, though she always did remain a friend to him.

As the years went by Terry felt dismay once more. He watched Wrenna and she turned her gaze blind to him for the most part, he knew that she was in love with another boy who he was never fond of but he wouldn't intervene in anyway in fear of her learning about what he felt for her and even greater fear of rejection. By then he grew very fond of Wrenna and one might even think a little obsessed. What can I say? He was a young boy in his mid-teens who was in love with a girl that didn't love him as he did her, nor even notice that he loved her. He would listen to her when she spoke of him and though he was jealous he tried best not to show it, and he was very jealous. But Terry never was the spiteful kind, plus he didn't want to see Wrenna sad if he said some bad things about this lad, nor did he want to see her angry at him in such a way that he could never recover at the very least her friendship which he held dear even though he wanted more.

Where does Terry's family fit in all of this? Well other than his parents Terry had a brother who would speak with, but very seldom about the way that he felt because he would feel too embarrassed to share such things with his brother. But there were times when he asked certain things in a way so vague that his brother couldn't perceive what was really happening, he often received good advice and he loved his brother for it even though he and his brother wouldn't always get along. What can I say? They are siblings and it is very seldom when siblings always got along. Terry's brother is five years older than he and he would often be seen about the older kids in those days, he tried to pay little to no attention to Terry's interaction and troubles with other kids. Maybe he was a tad selfish or maybe there was some other intentions behind this, I can't tell, but they were brothers and would act it every now and then if matters were important enough.

When Terry was seventeen a hard time fell upon he and his family. By then his brother was married and went off to live with his wife, but business for Terry's family went bad and they had little coin in their pockets and they feared that they should lose their home if this were to continue. This stirred a bit of tension around Terry's parents and they would often bicker late in the night whilst poor Terry tried to sleep. There were times in the past when such tension was built, but it wasn't as bad as it was then. Terry often shared these things with Wrenna and told her all about his troubles at home, but of course there was no more than comforting him that she could do about it, and her comfort would always get his mood back up and make him smile once more.

With the lack of money that Terry's parents' had he was required to take some apprenticeships and gradually work. He knew that this would take a lot of his time and he knew that he'd not see Wrenna much around that time, but then a thought clicked him. 'Maybe it's for the best' he thought, because he could not bear to see Wrenna with anyone else but himself and he didn't really trust Wrenna in the hands of any one, but there was nothing that he was willing to do about it. And in that way he hid himself and bent all his effort into his apprenticeships and work in those years, distancing himself widely from Wrenna until a day might come again when he is willing to face her and perhaps even tell her how he felt. Though he feared that she would remain in someone else's hands and never have interest in him at all when that time came, but that did not change his mind. He worked and eventually things became stable in his home and he became comfortable with his life as it was going then, even if he did miss Wrenna a lot more than he would like to admit.
