Leofmund's journal: 22nd day since arriving in Bree
The day has finally come, sooner than I expected. Yesterday it was all a mess, and I was sure I would have to ride south on my own. But things have changed, for the better. I saw some flickering lights from the Mead hall, as I was setting up my tent outside. Thirsty for a pint I entered the hall, and found Irwfrith, Melowen, Ferawyn and Wulfreda busy arguing. At first I had no idea what the argument was about, but I soon realized it was the same issue from the last meeting. The hotheads from yesterday, Daellas and his brother, had left everyone behind it seemed.
Unity seems lost to these people, and ranks and order seems to be gone with the two brothers. I tried my best to point out strength in numbers is always the best course of action. They all eventually agreed to ride out, me included. But even to this they could not agree, when to leave? The maiden called Wulfreda wanted to leave as soon as possible, to find Daellas and Arunel. To my surprise in the end Irwfrith agreed. I do not know what strength lies in this shield-maidens sword, but to let her ride out alone....I ended up volunteering to ride with her.
The group returning south is thus split in three, the brothers, Wulfreda and me, and the rest who will be leaving in a few days. All in all eight riders i reckon! Its more than i could ever hope for. More will follow if this divided group of riders can confirm a relative safe passage across the Isen. I aim not to return, but to stay close to the Fords, and if possible send tidings north. If all else fails, i will have to find my way through the Gap on my own.
Wyne will be carrying a heavy load. I will have to walk beside him now and then as to not exhaust him. His caparison, banner and my eorling hauberk have been tightly packed away, along with saddle bags filled with supplies. I hope once again to trust in my worn dunlending leather armor for protection, and disguise.
My sister will most likely despair at the news of my departure. At least I can take comfort in her safety. I must write her a letter, it is still time before i have to meet up with Wulfreda.
