Background
Steindor is an adventurer and scribe from Torsbury, in Rohan, raised in a family of storytellers. He was the lesser of three brothers, intrepid in spirit since his youth, who couldn’t find his thirst for knowledge quenched in the rusticity of his country. Against the will of his father, he asked for his part of the inheritance, left his home, and went to Minas Tirith, where he became a Scribe apprentice. There, having learned the art of scripture, he fell in love with the Kingdom’s history, and even more with the Elvish backgrounds of whom he almost hadn’t heard in his own people’s folktales. Therefore, years after, he asked permission to leave the city on a peace mission to Rivendell and explore the ruins of Eregion, under the recommendation of Gondor’s Master of Forges to gather practical knowledge on metallurgy. Nevertheless, his true intentions were to dive deep into the Elvish culture as much as he could; into their beliefs, their poetry, their magic, and science. During this trip he fell under the attack of a handful of desperate widows who raided caravans around the Gap of Rohan: the ‘Dead Captain Wives’, led by a woman named Cyninge. He was mistaken as some noble of Gondor and expected to receive a rich sum for his ransom. But as days and weeks passed by, while the band realized he was nothing but a low–functionary, Cyninge and Steindor fell in love and later got married. He spent some years among them and earned their full trust, even calling him ‘Dead Captain’, a name that would inspire fear, mostly among the Dunlendings. During this time, they raided mainly groups from Dunland; they even forged certain fame after defeating a band of Orcs that attacked the town of Marton, in West Rohan. Time after, however, Steindor parted alone to fulfill his mission in Elvish lands, and unable to find his wife on the way back, he returned to Gondor, where he focused on transcribing his memories in two separated books: ‘Life among Brigands’ and ‘Curiosities about Elves’, which are still unfinished.
At the beginning of TA 3019, Steindor was found suspected of High Treason for joining a secret group of revolutionaries accused of having ties with Umbar, which attempted against the Steward of Gondor, Denethor II. This forced him to flee to Torsbury and find shelter among his kin, but upon his arrival, he found the town razed. He joined with the remaining forces of Erkenbrand, who had fled from the Second Battle of the Fords, and later joined Éomer’s army.
After the war, he dedicated himself to finding Cyninge and her band, or their fate, and the fate of his father and brothers, although not with much hope.
