Prelude: Heritage

The coldest of winds had long been ravaging the land of Nevrast. It was not uncommon for the heather-lands to be beset by such a thing; being a land encircled by ocean and mountain. The Ered Wethrin lay to the South, cutting off Beleriand, Ered Lómin to the North and Belegaer to the West. Yet there was a terrible chill to the winds in recent times, some lingering memory, a malice, seemed to be borne upon the very airs. No burning heat fell upon the land of Beleriand, no silver shimmer of the moon rising high; for this was still before the creation of such things. Therefore, the Elves whom dwelt East of the Great Sea took such delight in the starlight of Elbereth. They reveled in the quiet shining and flickering of her creation, revering her name in honour and in memory. For the many Sindar Elves in Beleriand there could not be a fairer moment in time when peace still reigned over the quiet dark.

In Nevrast there dwelt many of these folk, content in song and craft and merriment. Those whom made a home in this land did so for joy of the coast and the many sea-birds whose calls filled the airs. It came to be that here in the encircled land, two Elves of minor houses, long in friendship and love, fostered their commitments into permanency. Beneath the stars of Elbereth they exchanged rings of silver for that of gold and swore to Eru - lest the everlasting darkness fell upon them. He was named Herulin, which signifies his lordship over land and lakes. Long had he been in waiting for the hand of his future wife, withdrawing to wander the lakes about his small holding in anticipation for the answer of his love - thus did he become cold and detached from all about him. She was named Lothros, which signifies a beauty not unlike the forlorn flower, cast upon a warm wind and onto the crest of a wave - to be forever lost to all. She was prone to worry and hesitation; such anguish did Herulin gain from her when he asked for her love.
