Background
“The Northern-Beards” — Guardians of Zigilgund after the fall of Sauron
I. Origins
Dragnar GoldenBeard was born among the halls of the Blue Mountains (Ered Luin), where the dwarves had long rebuilt a quiet strength after ages of wandering. He was no prince nor lord, but a warrior of rare endurance, known for the golden gleam of his beard and the calm fury of his shield-arm.
After the downfall of Sauron and the breaking of the Shadow, many believed peace had returned to the northern world.
But tales reached Erebor and the Blue Mountains that the Angmarim still lingered in the frozen wastes of Forochel—wandering remnants of dark cults, clinging to witchcraft of old.
The far North needed watchers.
So Dragnar was chosen to lead a small company northward: a handful of seasoned dwarves and young hopefuls eager to carve their own sagas.
II. The Return to Zigilgund
Zigilgund, once an outpost of the Longbeards, had lain abandoned for centuries. Its halls were cracked with frost, its forge cold as the heart of winter. Yet its bones remained strong.
Dragnar’s company reclaimed the fortress stone by stone.
They rebuilt the gates.
They relit the forges.
They drove out the spirits that clung like shadows to the corridors.
The Losoth, hardy folk of the ice, watched in wary silence. But when Dragnar’s dwarves defended one of their caravans from a pack of Angmarim raiders, trust began to grow between them—slow as winter dawn, but steady.
Thus was born a rare alliance:
Losoth and Dwarf standing side by side against the frozen darkness.
III. Tarâg-durûn — “The Northern-Beards”
Once Zigilgund breathed again, Dragnar named his fellowship:
Tarâg-durûn
The Northern-Beards
A banner for dwarves who had abandoned hearth and home to guard the rim of the world.
Their duty was not conquest, but vigilance:
to patrol the white roads,
to shatter Angmarim encampments before they grew strong,
to chart the ice for safe Losoth travel,
and to keep watch for darker things lurking in the storms.
Some say the dwarves of Tarâg-durûn heard the White Maw howl during the Long Storm…
and lived to tell the tale.
IV. Dragnar GoldenBeard
Though no king, Dragnar became known across Forochel as:
The Warden of the Frost,
The Restorer of Zigilgund,
The Golden-Bearded Sentinel.
He is stern yet fair, slow to speak but swift to act.
The Losoth call him Norsuvarri — “Stonefriend.”
He carries a shield etched with runes of the deep ice, and his beard—braided with frost-charms—glitters even under stormlight.
V. The Present Days
Tarâg-durûn remains small but resolute.
Their anvil-song echoes once more in Zigilgund, and the northern winds carry whispers that the old fortress lives again.
Travelers tell of dwarves patrolling the frozen paths, lanterns glowing like embers in the snow.
And though the Shadow has been broken, Dragnar
knows well:
In the North, danger sleeps lightly.
And Tarâg-durûn sleeps even lighter.
