Flowers For Alma (aged 6 months)
(written for a granddaughter)
When Alma dreams it seems, she goes,
To where a magic garden grows.
Each flower in the good soil planted,
Holds a wish, may all be granted!
Alma dances on the grass
All too quick the seasons pass.
Hear her laugh and hear her sing,
Of what the years to come may bring!
In frost the pure white snowdrop peeps,
Her promise of new life she keeps.
Just as her bells mark hope of spring
May life to Alma good things bring.
Alma dances on the grass
All too quick the seasons pass.
Hear her laugh and hear her sing,
Of what the years to come may bring!
The cheerful crocus seeks the light,
Crowds in coloured carpets bright,
Looking always to the sun.
May Alma’s days be filled with fun!
Alma dances on the grass
All too quick the seasons pass.
Hear her laugh and hear her sing,
Of what the years to come may bring!
The drooping daffodil’s display
Sees yellow trumpets gently sway,
Wishing luck to all who hear.
Good fortune to you, Alma dear!
Alma dances on the grass
All too quick the seasons pass.
Hear her laugh and hear her sing,
Of what the years to come may bring!
The tulip flower sits tall and proud,
Its crimson cup above the crowd
A symbol of a love that’s deep.
May Alma ever that love keep!
Alma dances on the grass
All too quick the seasons pass.
Hear her laugh and hear her sing,
Of what the years to come may bring!
Forget not the forget-me-not,
Hidden in a shady spot,
She shyly calls ‘Remember me’.
May Alma ever faithful be!
Alma dances on the grass
All too quick the seasons pass.
Hear her laugh and hear her sing,
Of what the years to come may bring!
Tall stands the larkspur, colours bright,
In shades of purple, pink and white,
Think well of others, larkspur pleads:
Alma, be kind, in thoughts and deeds.
Alma dances on the grass
All too quick the seasons pass.
Hear her laugh and hear her sing,
Of what the years to come may bring!
The poppy dreams in summer heat
Of music soft and fancies sweet,
Imagines worlds built in the mind:
May Alma inspiration find!
Alma dances on the grass
All too quick the seasons pass.
Hear her laugh and hear her sing,
Of what the years to come may bring!
The sunflower soldiers stand erect,
Their heads in brightest orange decked.
Loyal and brave through grief and strife,
Grant Alma courage through her life!
Alma dances on the grass
All too quick the seasons pass.
Hear her laugh and hear her sing,
Of what the years to come may bring!
The red rose does true lovers bind,
Offered up by those who’d find
A match that’s made in heaven above.
May Alma one day find true love!
Alma dances on the grass
All too quick the seasons pass.
Hear her laugh and hear her sing,
Of what the years to come may bring!
The dahlia with its pompom bright,
Stands majestic and upright.
Alma, may such dignity
And inner strength be granted thee.
Alma dances on the grass
All too quick the seasons pass.
Hear her laugh and hear her sing,
Of what the years to come may bring!
The hardy pink geranium
Thrives and prospers in the sun,
But flowers still late in the year.
Alma, good health, long life, good cheer!
Alma dances on the grass
All too quick the seasons pass.
Hear her laugh and hear her sing,
Of what the years to come may bring!
The modest pansy, many hued,
Throughout the year brings merry mood.
Alma, be you rich or poor,
Find contentment evermore!
Alma dances on the grass
All too quick the seasons pass.
Hear her laugh and hear her sing,
Of what the years to come may bring!
