Sarnai's Family Portrait
"What do you think?" Baatar smiled down at his daughter, unrolling the scroll that portrayed their family, posing in their best clothes for one material reminder of how much they meant to each other.
"I think the painter was in a hurry," Sarnai commented critically. "She left out a lot of details."
"It's lovely, dear." Oyuun was always the diplomatic one. "I'm glad I saved up enough coin to pay for something like this."
"I admit I was skeptical at first," Baatar admitted, scratching his beard more out of habit than anything else, "but I don't think it was a waste."
Oyuun rolled her eyes. "Both of you are such pinnacles of tact. It's a perfectly fine piece."
Sarnai frowned. "We don't have anywhere to hang it."
"Then," Baatar said with a sigh, "I suppose we have to carry it with us, Little Rose. One more scroll case won't be the worst thing that's happened to us."
"In terms of weight," Oyuun added with a giggle, "the worst thing that happened to us was probably having a daughter!"
They laughed far longer at that than any of them would like to admit.
