The Wolf Pup

The Pony was packed when Nimeway stepped in.  She let out a sigh, turning back out of the door.  Ok, not just the Pony was packed, there was people all around Bree.  Despite her curiosity about why there were so many people, Nime’s antisocial tendencies won out.  She slipped behind the Pony and untie her white horse, Arieway.  Arieway didn’t need a rope to follow Nime, and in fact, the horse insisted Nime to mount her instead of walking.  Which of course, the large beast won out the argument and Nime road out of Bree.

The sky began to dim as the sun set, Arieway ran through the Bree-land fields towards Starmere Lake.  The path slopped down to the water’s edge and Nime allowed her horse to pause to drink some of the water from the stream. They then waded through the river and started up the steep slope to Ost Barandor.  Like always, Nime dismounted her horse and allowed the mare to graze on the grass around the old ruins.

Nime climbed the steps leading up to the ruins and made her away to the other end.  The little animals on the rock turned to run, fleeing the possible threat.  Though, of course Nime was not an actual threat.  But the entire flight or fight reaction kicked in and the animals chose to flee.  Nime couldn’t care less though.  She was content with being alone, she liked solitude.

However, her solitude was short lived when a wolf cub began to howl at her.  The sound made Nime jump, looking at the pup who howled again.  It took Nime a moment before she realized that the pup’s paw was stuck inside a glass bottle, which is what caused the pup to howl.  Nime rose to her feet and slowly approached the pup, holding out her hand with the palm down.  The pup took no attention to her hand, just letting out another low, mournful howl as it limped over to her.

“You poor thing,” Nime murmured, kneeling down to the pup.  She looked at the paw, trying to carefully pull it out, but the wolf pup’s paws were huge despite the thin legs the pup had.  She lifted the pup up and made her way to Arieway, who was still grazing below the ruins.  On the saddle, Nime pulled her thin knife out and slid it between the pup’s leg and the bottle, trying to pull the paw out, but she was too afraid of hurting the pup.

Finally, Nime decided to break the glass since she could not come up with any other solutions.   There was still a gap between the tip of the pup’s paw and the bottom of the bottle.  Nime laid the pup down on the ruins and drew out her dagger, which was a different blade from the thin knife.  She sat for a moment, holding her weight over her feet as she sat on her knees.  What a scene that was?  A poor wolf pup with his paw stuck in a bottle and Nime holding a dagger unsure of what to do.

Nime used her dagger to break the glass, being as careful as she could not to cut the poor pup.  Though in the end, the pup had a few cuts on his paw.  Nime brought the pup home to clean is scratches before taking him back to Ost Barandor and letting him free again to hopefully find his pack once more.
