As the snow started to melt in the spring of TA 2913, a distant traveller was seen riding up the Vale of Thrain. His name was Halgrim Hammerfell, of the Lonely Mountain. Bearing dispatches from the Ironhills, he soon stood before the throne of Thorin Oakenshield. That very night at a grand feast in Thorins honour, he spotted a rare dwarf beauty. Eyes like emeralds, fiery red hair and a soft beard with intricate embroideries, ample bosom and wide hips. Her smile could light the hall on its own, and there and then Halgrim decided to marry her. Of course such things need to be arranged and upon returning the following year, after proper correspondence between the families, the arrangement for a handfasting ceremony was made. Halgrim and Aurin lived happily for a while in the Thorins hall caverns. Augir was born a year later. Halgrim's duties then began to take him away from home, first for weeks at a time, then months....years. Augir was the joy in Aurins life, as she began to notice a change in Halgrims nature. He never told her of his adventures but she could see in his face the ordeal he must have been through. When he returned from one of his numerous journeys he decided his son was to be hardened in the mines. As a young dwarf, 25 years of age, Augir laboured and lived in the mines of Thorins hall. At first it was arduous work for young Augir but soon he began to enjoy delving in the mountain, and began to show signs of strength and maturity. The last time Augir saw his father, he was given an axe with the encouragement "Learn how to wield it in your spare time!". From then on he could be seen practicing and sparring whenever he could find the time.
In TA 2941 Thorin Oakenshield left his halls with a small company of Dwarfs. Later that year grievous news arrived. The despatches told the tale of a great battle in the east, and the death of Thorin Oakenshield. Aurin also received the news that her husband was among the fallen. Augir who barely new his father wept more for Thorins fate than the fate of his father. His mother on the other hand never recovered from Halgrim's death, and she died soon after. Augir, now an orphan, toiled in the mines and buried his sorrows in ale.
During the rule of Gormr Doursmith, the situation gradually deteriorated and Augir fled Thorins hall for Gondamon. Despite still being of young age, Mathi Stouthand offered him a post as a guard. Augir took part in many raids during this period, against the Goblins in the Vale and in Rath Teraig, which fuelled his hatred for Goblins. He played a minor role as the Dourhands was finally cast out from the halls of Thorin by Lord Dwalin and his brave dwarfs. Augir returned to his birth home, now a dwarf in his prime.
Sometime after these events, a strange dwarf arrived at Augir's house. It was Skaril Stonehand, brother to Halgrim and Augir's uncle. He had come to find his nephew and bring him to the Lonely Mountain. From Skaril he learned that Halgrim had sacrificed a quiet family life for the greater good of all dwarves. In the end he was slain, protecting his king, in the Battle of five armies. Eventually Augir journeyed with his uncle to the Lonely Mountain. Upon the tomb of his father Augir placed his most valued axe. He knew then his fate was the same as his fathers. For the greater good of all dwarves he would journey between the dwarven strongholds, slaying goblins and orcs, keeping the old trade routes open.
