Records of Elenion: The search for Maglor
I, Fealinwë, High warden of Elenion in Imladris, am adding this diary excerpt to the combined records of Elenion to mark an important event in the history of our order. The time of writing is about two moons before Yestarë in the Common Year 3019 of the Third Age.
Maglor
Ever since Maedhros killed himself in desperation we are without leader. I have taken up leadership, but I do not have the same knowledge and skills he had. We came to Endor with Fingolfin, and it still feels strange to depend on the sons of Fëanor after all that happened. But we have no choice.
Over the years we might have learned a lot ourselves but the truth is that only Maedhros and Maglor knew exactly what Fëanor discovered. Our only hope now lies with Maglor. Rumour has it he is still wandering the shores and rivers and he might not have perished with the destruction of the old lands in the west. We are still here and must not abandon hope to reveal the truth about our Exile.
What is the actual purpose of the stones?
The silmarils are lost to us, as we are meant to believe, but the fact that Fëanor was able to craft them from existing sources means his stones are not the only means by which we can escape our Exile. Fëanor also crafted the elfstone, but we still don’t know its purpose. Eglamor told me about the white stone of Erebor, the prized gem of the King under the Mountain. It must be a precious stone indeed, as it contains its own light, but what’s most important is that the dwarves did not create it themselves. They merely found it! This means we can still pursue our cause. Arda no doubt conceals more than meets the eye, and it gives me hope, although only a little. Considering the past, it might not be wise to set our minds on stealing this so-called Arcenstone, but it’s at least worth to keep its existence in mind. A visit to Erebor to request information about the stone is the least we can do. Skadis is doing the same with the elfstone which should now be in Lothlorien. I still believe that, despite her insight and knowledge, Galadriel doesn’t know about our quest, so I hope she will grant us the information we need and doesn’t think we are merely after the stone itself. Since Maedhros jumped to his death while holding the silmaril, this must mean the stones themselves aren’t all that important. Maglor threw his in the sea. I refuse to believe it’s because they burned their hands. It’s not hard to keep the stone into your possession other than your bare hands. The cause must be another kind of torment, and Maglor is the only one left who knows why they got rid of them. The only clue we have so far is him whispering ‘Wingilótë’ over and over again. We really must know its significance, since I also fear this is why Maedhros gave up his life.
Desperate measures
I have summoned those in command for a renewed search for Maglor. I hope we find him this time after all, or at least become aware of what happened to him. Honestly, I do not know what to do next if we can’t find him. If Maglor is no longer here, it means we are officially stuck on our quest and with the dwindling of the other elves the future doesn’t look too bright. We must have a breakthrough otherwise I fear we will suffer the same fate as many of our kin, and fade without hope. We must do everything we can to not let this happen. In the meantime we will make ready to leave to Forlindon when the time comes.
We are Elenion, and one day we will return!
