Ilviel the elven-fair,
Radiant maiden, gladness of heart!
Starlit is her golden hair, her limbs are white.
Most lissom and happy her dancing light.
There she danced on the riverbank
In the Halls of Fire many songs are sung.
Her loveliness and heart so fair,
Embraced all with laughter and joy.
Many-a-melody and laughter hail
From the maidens in the jolly Valley yonder,
But Ilviel's laughter was lighter than crystal's shimmer.
I stride upon the Mountains Blue,
Searching for a track or sign of you.
Across the mist, on the song of the wind
I seek to find you Ilviel, starlit hue!
Ilviel, Ilviel! where have you gone ?
We cry out your name but answers none.
Ilviel the fairest, starlit maiden,
Now lost to our eyes, sorrow is laden.
My heart longs to behold
Thy fair beauty and radiance gold.
The Halls are empty no bird chirps,
No string stirs, no flute sings.
For the dancing feet as light as linden leaves
Wander where none knows
Yet the beloved's longing in the hearts
Forevermore grows.
