((OOC: This is a list of all the fictional plants appear in Middle-Earth that differ from real world plants))
Dear reader, I write here a brief introductuary of plants, some trees and shrubs found in our fair Lands. I mention only their description, which is kept breif and their names (Their name's meaning and origin). I myself, Drandr of Rhovanion, am a woodsman (of craft, not race) and by force of trade - and family tradition - have had to gain and aquire knowladge of the plants and a variety of other olvar in Middle-Earth. Though I have come to know the plants of our current and previouse Age, I have gained some knowladge of the plants of Beleraind of the First Age. Firstly, I would like explain olvar. Olvar (Quenya: Growing things with roots in the earth) Inanimate living things, as opposed to Kelvar.
Aeglos - A kind of shrub that apparantly grew around the hill of Amon Rúdh in Beleriand, described as being "long-legged", sweet-smelling and creating gloomy "aisles" beneath the roof of branches. Tis true, for I have seen it, that this shrug grows in the land of Ithilien in Gondor, but these sprout yellow flowers instead of the common white. I personlly find this shrub like the common-white-flowering furze, or gorse-bush. The name meaning Snow-thorn in common Elvish is also the name of the famed spear of the last Noldorin King, Gil-Gilad.
Athelas - An apparantly healing herb, called aséa aranion which is into Westron as Kingsfoil. On account of scrolling many sources, pappers and many a text of the plant-life of Middle-Earth I have more often than not read the common belief that this plant was first brought to Middle-Earth by the Númenóreans, but it is also said that the Great Hound Huan brought athelas to Beren, so therefore athelas had already been grown in Middle-Earth and knowladge of it's healing properties were already known. In this Age knowladge of admistrating it's healing qualities is not know by the common person. Tis said that only the Dúnedain of the Old Kingdom know how to administrate it's healing powers. Upon reading scripts in Gondor I find that in the folklore of this Kingdom athelas is espacially powerful in the hands of the King - though, I very much doubt Gondor will ever see a King at it's mighty throne I would very much like to see this plant's full potential.
Culumalda - Spending more time in Gondor am told of the Culumalda tree (Quenya: Golden-red tree) that is found in the Feild of Cormallen in Northern Ithilien. The trees leaves are of a golden-red or a bronze colour, hence it's name, I can only assume it's Sindarin form is Barangorn. During my reasearch I find that Elves loved Culumalda due to it's likeness of the Laurelin and that it was a tall and thin tree.
Elanor - This is a small flower, it's shape most like a star, and is yellow in colour hence it's name 'sun-star' in Sindarin. This flower grows, I am told, ubundantly in Ceirn Amroth in the Golden Wood of Lothlórien. On further reading of old manuscripts from ages past I find it also grew in the famed Elven realm of Tol Eresséa, though I know nothing of this realm and my knowladge of the First Age is limited and so therefore is this entry.
Lairelosse - As I said in the above entry, my knowladge of the First Age and of Numenor is very limited (due to books and other sources being very hard to come by, and also that very few Elves seem to be of much help to me at this time). This plant is said to have been ever-green and was brought to Numenor by the Elves. It's name is quenyan so I cannot devulge it's name accurately, but here I enter my best guess. -white-bloom? To you my dear reader, I ask that you aid me - if anyone with a knowladge of the acnient toungue of the Noldor knows the meaning of this word please contact me in any means.
Lebethron - This is a species of tree found in Gondor. I am told, by my source in the Sountern Kingdom, that the crown of the Kings is kept in a basket, or box, made of this tree.
Lissuin - A sweet-smelling flower which is said to bring peace to whomever smells it's scent. The begining of this name is Quenyan for 'honey' (lis) which I can only assume, and am unable to find a source that can devulge it's meaning, refers to the plats scent and odour.
Mallorn, Mellym - This is the tree of Lothlorien. While, during my research, I am scrolling through pappers and books about this most noble tree I come across a most beautiful description which I shall enter here:
Its bark was silver and smooth, and its boughs somewhat upswept after the manner of the beech; but it never grew save with a single trunk. Its leaves, like those of the beech but greater, were pale green above and beneath were silver, glistering in the sun; in the autumn they did not fall, but turned to pale gold. In the spring ... and as soon as the flowers opened the leaves fell, so that through spring and summer a grove of malinorni was carpeted and roofed with gold, but its pillars were of grey silver. Its fruit was a nut with a silver shale.
I am told, and managed to find little information, of this tree's past but what little I do know is that is once grew in Tol Eresséa and early in the Second Age was taken to Númenor but they did seldom grow anywhere eltes save for under the spell and magic of the Sorceress of the Golden Wood. Though I have not seen it with my own weary eyes, I am told, or have been told so, that the Sindar of Lorien live up atop these great trees, among their large baughs and apparant beneath-silver and green-above leaves. Oh, my readers, I cannot hope to even describe what it must be like to live on these huge platforms that I am told about as I think on my notes for this enter. The Elf goes on about Life in the Crown of the Mallorn, but I can only say to you that you must set your own eyes upon them, for I little room and I am not masterful enough of word and quill to decribe them myself.
Mallos - I know little of this plant save that it grows in Southern Dúnedain Kingdom of Gondor, specificly Lebennin and who's name I can say means 'yellow-snow'.
Pipe-Weed - A type of plant developed by the Halfling Race used most commonly by that Race, Dwarves and the Rangers of the North for smoking, which is odd considering weed was first only used for it's esteemed fregrance of it's flowers.. It has been called Halfling's Leaf by the Dúnedain (of both North and South) and in the former grows as a wild plant. The plants, or weed's most common name is Westmansweed as it was first brought to Middle-Earth by the Númenóreans during the Second Age, which I devulge from it's Gondorian name Sweet Galenas. Upon visiting The Shire, for research - not just to stand and gaze out at the beauitful rolling hills of this realm - I find that pipe-weed was first grown by a Hobbit named Tobold Hornblower - which the Hobbits of the Shire are more than happy to talk to me about, oddly - in a province of the Shire called Longbottom. Despite this being a foreign leaf the Halflings (probably of Bree-land) were the first to use it for smoking - which again the Hobbits were keen to tell me, over and over and often say to me "We were the first to smoke weed! Not even the Wizards had thought of that!". There are many types of weed grown in the Shire each with a name most interesting and odd but I shan't go on about these, lest I loose my train of thought! The smoking of weed was atb first only a Bree-land activity where it soon spread to the Shire and with the passing of wanderers through the town of Bree they picked up this habit and then themselves passed it unto other peoples and folk. Elves disaprove of this habit enitrelly. It is said that the activity of smoking (which I know myself) calms the mind and eases the sould, along with the strains the body is suffering at that moment and as of yet have found no couses for concern when smoking pipe-weed and have found it to be a very healthy pass time.
Simbelmyné, Alfirin - This is a most beautiful flower of white whose name is translated from the Rhorric toungue (A toungue I know who's peoples my folk are related too) is Evermind reffering to the fact that thiis blossoms all year round and never seems to disopoint in regarts to it's beauty. Though beautiful, I must point out - without trying to sullen the mood of this document - this plant grows on the graves and burrows of the Kings of Rohan and grows most thick upon the grave of the famous and revered Helm Hammerhand (of this I know, for I have seen it).
Individual Trees
Here I enter singular trees, trees personaified and that are important to either a peoples, a story or even if their importance is lost in the passing of time and is no longer remembered.
Old Man Willow - A willow of the Old Forest to the West of the Shire. It is said that this is a cured tree, not of kind of Evil that befalls out of the Gates of Morder but evil nonetheless and it is also said that The Old Man Willow can cast a spell or curse apon those who tred it's roots too closely.
The Two Trees of Valinor - I am told little of these most noble of trees and can find very little information to be had of them. What information I can devulge is that these were magical trees that were of the Blessed Realm and lit that land. They were hewed by the Namless-Enemy and their light lost save in the Silmarili. The two trees were apparantly different from each other, both in age and they way they grew and from the colours of their leaves to the shape of their flowers.
Party Tree - Tree in the Party Field below Bad End, The Hill, in Hobbiton in the Shire. This Tree is very large and many respected Hobbit held parties here, hence it's name.
