Odall

Odall, the 'Gaffer' Brackenboar

Name Odall
Occupation
Gaffer (Captain) of the Bree Town Watch
Age
Fiftieth winter
Race
Man
Residence
Bree Hill
Kinship
Outward Appearance

A bald, mutton-chopped, stiff-postured gaffer. His manner of speech is rustic but learned, yet there is no haughtiness that would befit a lord or one of privilege.

He wears the trappings of a Watchman well, and stands proud and broad-shouldered (a trait of all Brackenboars), if not necessarily tall; but when the last bell chimes, he wears the common linens of any Bree-man retiring to the tavern of the Prancing Pony.

Indeed he has a dry warmth to his overall demeanor; everything from his calloused knuckles, to his leathery lines of care; but they are matched only by the coldness of his detachment, and the bluntness of his deadpan humour.

Background

'These (Dunlendings) were a remnant of the peoples that had dwelt in the vales of the White Mountains in ages past. But in the Dark Years others had removed to the southern dales of the Misty Mountains; and thence some had passed into the empty lands as far north as the Barrow-downs. From them came the Men of Bree; but long before these had become subjects of the North Kingdom of Arnor....' J.R.R. Tolkien.

In a corner of Bree, there is a family named the Brackenboars. They hold a likely mistaken belief that their ancestors were a Boar Clan among the Wild-men. Family myth holds that it was these men who were the first to found the settlement on Bree Hill. Subject to much debate, resulting in little more than time-honoured banter from the Bree families at the Inn, the Brackenboars make no fuss about this supposed heritage.
The eldest of this generation is Odall Brackenboar, a once prized knuckle-fighter in his heyday around the Hill. He has served as a Watcher beyond the memory of most Men, and has survived to become a veteran, even by the reckoning of Outsiders. He has fathered many sons, became a widower of his late wife, and mentored the previous Watch-captain before being appointed the top spot. In these troubling times, he imparts his rustic wisdom and no-nonsense attitude in all matters, dedicating his life to the defense of the Hedge-wall.
Whatever criticism could be weighed against the Watch, little of it would be true of the Gaffer himself: he is staunchly immovable in his principles, almost to a fault; incorruptible, and undaunted in the face of coercion and bribery. He is disinterested in his public image, caring little if the politics favour or scorn him. Indeed his weaknesses are unknown, so well-kept is his private life.
