Outward Appearance

Weary and road-worn, seven long years of journeying have left him so. Vinalf is clad in the once colourful garb of a boatsman of Laketown, now tattered and torn. He goes forth armed only with a rough knife and a bow slung over his back.

Sometimes he will gaze West with a wistful look to him, as if slipping under some half-remembered spell. But the fey glimmer in his eyes is gone just as soon as it arrives, leaving Vinalf only with an expression of great longing and sorrow.

Background

“...perilous is it to cross a gulf set by doom; and should any do so, they will not find joy upon the other side, but the griefs of both. So I deem.” - Finrod Felagund

To the Raft-Elves along the River-Running he is known as Neron - meaning lamentable; for his doomed quest to pursue an Elf-maiden West and profess his love. Men of Laketown curse his name though, for the family he left behind.

For no sooner had Vinalf heard the singing of Sireth and glimpsed her beauty as she washed clothes along the river, did he fall in love. How long he stayed hidden listening to her song he could not have said, but when he awoke his life was forever changed.

Etymology: Vinalf is a compound of Vin- Old Norse for ‘wine’ [Vinland] and -Alf meaning ‘elf’ in an old northern mannish tongue [Gandalf]. Originating from his family's long standing wine trade with the neighboring elves and likely also used by many of his ancestors.

Before he would of said he'd loved many things, old tales and fine wine, the company of his kin and the peaceful days upon the Long-Lake. But that was before he knew true love and now they seem only dim candles next to a mighty hearth.
