Lily comes from Stock, at the very east of the Shire. The inhabitants consider themselves fairly cosmopolitan due to the variety of travellers that pass through, although few of the residents have travelled out of the Shire themselves. The ‘baby’ of a large extended family, Lily has never known hardship or cruelty and viewed the world as a wondrous place. She is skilled with musical instruments and was encouraged by her proud parents to play for family, friends and neighbours, which she did obediently for love of them and the joy it gave to others, rather than any wish to be the centre of attention. Families started to hire her to perform at parties and she developed sleight-of-hand tricks for entertaining young hobbits who were quickly bored with straightforward singing. She had recently been asked to travel all the way to Straddle to perform for a very distant, well-to-do relative on her mother’s side, which was considered a great honour (but which recognition her mother thought was ‘long overdue’). This was the first time she had left the Shire, insisting she would travel alone. Unfortunately she was sent on a ‘short-cut’ through the Old Forest by some cruel Men that she asked for help finding the right road. Completely lost, tired and scared, she ended up in the town of Combe. With her kind, open face and small stature, even for a hobbit, Lily is often underestimated. She dislikes violence and fights only when she has to, preferring to aid her companions in other ways.
