Outward Appearance

Vercanáto is tall and gaunt, almost abnormally so, though his sinewy muscles move with ease and practice.  His visage is severe, with fair skin and angular features that give him an air of annoyance or superiority.  He most often wears a cowl pulled low over his head and his hair pulled back, though his unruly jet-black hair seems to always leave a few rebellious strands hanging over his forehead.  He is most often adorned in greens, both dark and light, though he also enjoys wearing yellows, reds, oranges and other autumnal colors.  Often his clothes consist of little more than soft, well-worn leathers and textiles.  His horse, likewise, is seldom seen in ostentatious barding.  In contrast to the simplicity of his clothing, Vercanáto almost always wears his spear across his back, a magnificent weapon of ancient and intricate craft, obviously oft-used but expertly maintained.

Background

((This is a brief(ish) timeline of Vercanáto's life, though he will refuse to speak about most of this IC.))

Vercanáto was born in Cuiviénen, the son of Telwë, one of the followers of Tata, and his wife Telië. His father named him Telpëhtë (Q: telpë- silver; ëhtë- spear), and his mother named him Vercanáto (Q: verca- wild; náto- "it is that", or from atto- father). The family followed the rest of the Noldor to Aman, where they settled in Tirion upon Túna. There, Telwë and Telië had eight more children: four sons and four daughters.

Following the death of Finwë, Vercanáto's eldest brother, Níranga, left Tirion to follow the host of Fëanor. Fearing for the safety of his sibling, Vercanáto took it as his duty as the eldest to ensure his younger brother's safe return. All but one of his siblings, his youngest sister, agreed to follow him. They marched with the host of Fingolfin. The following years would hold much sorrow for Vercanáto.

Two of his sisters were lost during the crossing of the Helcaraxë. The siblings settled in Dor-lómin for a time as they tried to find word of the location of Níranga. After losing another sister during the Dagor Bragollach, and two of his brothers at the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, Vercanáto grew increasingly concerned with the protection of his youngest brother, Tuilëmír. Together, the two of them fled through Nargothrond to the Havens of the Falas, and from there to the Mouths of Sirion. It was there that they were finally reunited with Níranga, who had fled to the Mouths from Maglor's Gap. Upon learning of the great sorrow endured by his two remaining brothers as a result of their attempts to find him, Níranga agreed to join Vercanáto and Tuilëmír in seeking a way to return to Aman.

Following the War of Wrath, however, the brothers were convinced to stay in Middle Earth at the behest of one of the Falathrim, with whom Vercanáto had journeyed some time before. They decided to stay in Mithlond for a time, to help protect the Elves who had not yet undertaken the journey back to Aman. Vercanáto took the epessë Nyérëquen (Q: nyérë- sorrow; roquen- knight, rider).

During the Second Age, Vercanáto spent a great deal of time in Eregion, and, fleeing its destruction, came to live in the newly established Imladris. There he remained, serving as a scout and an outrider, until Gil-galad called upon the Elves to march into Mordor. He returned to Rivendell following the battle, where he has long since ridden the wilds around the refuge to help keep them safe and clear of evil.
