((This is a report written to Anglachelm, signed by Veryacano))
My Lord,
The hearing of Estarfin by the Cauns has taken place as you ordered. My impressions from Estarfin's account and the following discussions are:
Estarfin has partially lost his judgement and is unable to apply common sense. It is clear that this was the case during the events which led to his injuries. I cannot ascertain if this is a temporary state or if it is a permanent effect. I believe that this may be result of a taint of the mind not unlike results of severe battle fatigue; a taint of the mind which is no longer common among our troops.
He does not seem to understand or acknowledge his mistakes and the possible consequences he might have caused. He sees no fault in his actions. He makes no plea. This leads me to believe that he may attempt to flee or attempt other actions directly or indirectly harmful to himself or others.
The fact that he does not understand or acknowledge his mistakes may be the result of the taint that remains in his mind or result of pride. Or as Dolthafaer pointed out to me: Both. I do not know which is worse.
My lord it seems to me there is a trouble within Estarfin that must be resolved. Perhaps some kind of treatment for this taint is possible. Perhaps time may help and some leave is necessary.
As for actions, he has behaved irresponsibly and was seeking death during combat with the enemy. It is clear to me that he has disobeyed orders and put others at risk. Consequences of these actions are at your discretion. As his commanding officer, I believe we should seek out the ways to treat his condition first before punishment, which may not be necessary if treatment is successful.
