A Brief Mountain Skirmish

Thraingrim paused at the top of the valley, and sniffed the air uneasily. Smelled like elves, sure enough. “Those confounded Rangers,” he thought testily. “Good fellows, it seems, and tough… but asking me to come here?” And he started the long hike down into Rivendell, carrying a desperate request from the men back at the lake, looking for the Ranger’s Captain said to be stopping there.

Story
((Any who frequent the road past Noglond will notice the results of recent Goblin depredations in the area. The damage is described below.)) As the traveller approaches Noglond from the west, his nostrils are assaulted by the mixed odors of burnt wood and decaying meat. Near the road, and occasionally on it, lie the corpses of recently slain animals, lynx, bears, and sundry birds, animals that were wantonly slain and thrown down on the road to rot.

Brenwise relieved the discomfort in his legs by subtly adjusting his position, he was eager not to give away his hiding place that he had been occupying for the past four hours. Brenwise was used to these long periods of inactivity, he had on many occasions sat up all night amongst the boughs of a tree or up to his neck in a ditch just waiting for his quarry to arrive. On those occasions it had usually been a wolf or bear that had overcome its wariness and started to move closer and closer to inhabited farm buildings of villages.

- I couldn't decide about my future before at least trying to experience what elves of the Guard told me about, so I took my grandfathers sword and shield, packed few things and took the road north. I wanted to see Edhelion that many here sing about.

Gormbard awoke to find himself in a small metal cell. At first he thought that the Bree watch had finally caught up with him, the last thing he could remember was hurrying along the road from Brokenborings to Oatbarton when he had been struck from behind.

And I was elsewhere….

I could not draw breath; so hot and stupefying was the air. Beneath me the floor was dry to the touch, before me the tunnel was forebodingly dark save the odd glimmer of red light against the walls. I felt as if I were buried alive.

Chapter IV – A different kind of game

As I sat on a dry stone wall overlooking the Greenfields I took stock of the situation. My quarry had already departed and I was at best a half day behind him. He had been heading north that much was clear. I decided that he must have taken the road, a hobbit not used to these parts would be foolish to strike out across country – there were many hazards, not least the warren of old badger tunnels, but also more recent threats. The threat of goblins.
