Alex could feel eyes on his back.
Not many, but they were there. The talking behind him had gotten louder and simultaneously more hushed. It was evident there was at least someone staring at them both.
Penny was ignoring it pointedly, laughing quietly and pointing out, “S'jus' you they're lookin' a'. Na one expects much from me."
A small smirk crept up his face as he briefly allowed himself a moment to self-absorbedly entertain the idea of having all of the town’s eyes trained on him. That he would definitely enjoy. Instead of voicing his pleasure at the idea, however, he decided to be somewhat modest and said, “Pfft. You're worthy o' attention. I bet the only reason lads haven't approached you is because I'm your fiancé, an' I bite pretty hard if pissed enough.”
She smirked, and Alex privately took a moment to admire her easy-going nature, “Oi, nah. No' ta marry. Never.”
He snorted at her rebuttal, “Tch. They're no' gettin' you either way.” That’s no’ all yer worth.
Wrapping his arms around her, he heaved and lifted the woman into his lap, creating a protective cocoon with his embrace. He let himself get lost in her musty perfume and buried his face into the crook of her neck, content to have her close. Her skin was pleasantly warm compared to the cooling air around him, soft and limber to touch, comforting at the same time. He could feel her start in surprise and laugh and looked over his shoulder to find a few more eyes staring, “Oi, Oi, fair 'nough. Gonna sign yer name on me next?”
Alex lifted his head and winked cheekily before laughing, shaking his head and enjoying the banter, “No, no, I think the ring's enough. If y'want you can give me somethin' ridiculous in return to mark me as yours.”
Penny grinned, reaching up to take a hold of the daisy circlet crowned on her head. He watched her pluck one of the tiny white flowers and felt her jamming the stem between some strands of his hair, “Tha flowers work for tha'.”
The last time she had done that was weeks ago.
“You’ve no idea how much I missed those flowers.” He admitted, delighted. He tightened his hold on her as she laughed and incredulously asked, “Really?”
Aye, really. Swept away in the moment, he leant in to enthusiastically brush their lips together into a happy kiss. He couldn’t deny that he had been somewhat starved for affection ever since Penny had become afflicted with the curse of long working hours, and the warm, tingling feeling running through his body was a welcome ward against the cool wind now that night had arrived, bringing with it a storm that would fall upon them at any moment now. He was sure he would only be able to tell if the stars disappeared from the sky, but not now – he was busy.
He could feel Penny’s arms winding around his neck and let the warmth linger and tinge his cheeks pink, uncaring of the fact that they would now surely have caught the attention of more than just a few people with their brazen displays of affection. Eager, he deepened the kiss, just short of jabbing his tongue into her mouth, but instead of letting himself get completely drowned by waves of affection and passion, he allowed the moment to carry on as it was, glad to simply have the time to spend with her.
Notes: I don't think too much needs to be said here. A little affection never hurt anyone, right?
